Trip Overview:

This 6-day trip begins in the Lithuanian capital of Vilnius, staying in the stunning Baroque former residence of the noble Pacai family. Then spend two additional nights in Riga, enjoying all Latvia has to offer.

Settle into Vilnius on your first day and acquaint yourself with Lithuania. A private guide meets you for an excursion to Druskininkai National Park and Grutas Park. A sculpture park with controversial holdovers from the Soviet era is the centrepiece of Grutas Park, a unique and sometimes confronting look at Lithuanian life under Soviet rule. After lunch, enjoy a spa break at Druskininkai, with time to explore the attractive town centre before returning to Vilnius. Itinerary

Day 1: Arrive in Vilnius

This stunning Baroque palace and former residence of the noble Lithuanian Pacai family dates back to 1677. In its palace days, it witnessed the times of Lithuanian-Polish Commonwealth, the rule of Russian tsars and Napoleon who famously addressed the Vilnius townsfolk from the balcony in 1812.

Having undergone a complete renovation in 2018, the hotel combines the noble traditions of earlier centuries, its bon-vivant lifestyle and historical architecture with vibrant modern design. It enjoys the most sought-after location in the heart of the Old Town, its main entrance being right on Didzioji Street, an elegant street filled with high-end boutiques, restaurants and embassies. Day 2: Full Day Excursion to Druskininkai National Park with Grutas Park

Tour to Druskininkai - a SPA town in Southern Lithuania - starts from hotel reception with private guide and by driver/vehicle. It is famous not only for mineral waters and local healing muds, but also for its picturesque surroundings and for the world-famous artist M.K. Ciurlionis, a great composer and painter. Spend your time in the Grutas Park (entrance), which unoficially is called the "Stalin World" - a sculpture garden of Soviet-era statues and an exposition of ideological relics. The park also contains playgrounds, a mini-zoo and cafes. It was created in the wetlands of Dzukija National Park that is the biggest national park in Lithuania. Return to hotel at the end of excursion.

Day 3: Full Day Private Excursion to Kaunas with Pazaislis Monastery

Tour to Kaunas starts from hotel reception with a private guide and by driver/vehicle. After a 1.5 hour drive, reach the second biggest city in Lithuania, beautifully located at the confluence of two rivers - the Nemunas and the Neris. Explore the Old Town with the Town Hall, known locally as the White Swan, and the Kaunas Cathedral. Have a photo stop at the ruins of Kaunas Castle, built in the 13th century.

Also see the St. George's Church which is located near the castle ruins which was built in 15th century. Take a stroll along the Laisves Avenue (Liberty Avenue) which is a 1.5 km long pedestrian street - a shopping and entertainment area in Kaunas. Tour includes visit the Pazaislis Monastery (entrance) - a wonderful Lithuanian baroque pearl of the 17th century.

Return to hotel at the end of excursion.

Day 4: Vilnius to Riga

Tour to Jurmala starts in Riga from hotel reception with private guide and after 20 min drive by driver/vehicle arrive in the Latvian most beloved summer-time vacation town Jurmala. This vibrant Latvian sea resort is famous for its fantasy-like wooden architecture of summer houses, and it stretches over 40 km along the great sandy beach of the Baltic Sea. The resort offers many SPA's and health temples which are facing the white-sanded beach, where historically the rich and the aristocracy had come for more than a century to enjoy the calm tranquility of this place and take a walk on the beach. Take also a stroll along the pedestrian Jomas Street which houses many cafes, restaurants and gift shops. After the tour return to Riga.

Kaunas

Kaunas is Lithuania's second-largest city, as well as a university town and a center for industry. Before World War II, Kaunas was the national capital. It is 55 mi/85 km west of Vilnius, which was then part of Poland.

Like many cities in the region, Kaunas is divided into an Old Town and New Town. The major sights can be seen on foot. Visitors should begin in Rotuses Square in the Old Town, walk up Vilkiaus Street to the New Town pedestrian street, Laisves Aleja (Freedom Boulevard), and continue to St. Michael's, an Orthodox church that was turned into a museum of stained glass by the Soviets.

Rotuses Square, in the Old Town, is dominated by the white, five-story Town Hall with its graceful steeple. The building looks like a church and is so elegant that townspeople call it the White Swan. Also in the Old Town are the Gothic Church of St. George and the nearby 11th-century Kaunas Castle, which contains a history museum. Two other churches of note include the Kaunas Cathedral Basilica (the largest Gothic building in Lithuania) and the Holy Virgin Mary of the Assumption Church (the oldest brick building in the city, built in 1399). Vilniaus gatve is the prettiest street in the Old Town and makes for a pleasant stroll.

Laisves Aleja, in the New Town, is lined with stores, restaurants and cafes. Also on the street is a small park in front of the Music Theater. The park, now a national shrine, is where the young Lithuanian student Romas Kalanta set himself on fire in 1972 to protest the Soviet occupation. People often leave flowers at the site.

Other New Town sites include the Devil's Museum, containing 800 folk-art depictions of Beelzebub, including Hitler and Stalin, and the M.K. Ciurlionis National Museum of Art, a wonderful collection of the artist's work. Nearby, a row of traditional wooden crosses and busts of famous Lithuanians leads to the Freedom Monument. The monument disappeared during the Stalin years and was only rediscovered in 1989.

Just outside town is the Pazaislis Monastery and Church, a baroque Venetian edifice with rich decoration and frescoes. Also out of town—but considerably more somber in atmosphere—is the Ninth Fort, where 80,000 Jews were executed by the Nazis.

The Open Air Museum of Lithuania in the village of Rumsiskes, east of Kaunas, should not be missed. It showcases dwelling houses, farmstead buildings and folk-art monuments transferred from all ethnographic regions of the country in a beautiful location near the Kaunas Marios (man-made sea).

Druskininkai

Vilnius

Vilnius is the capital of Lithuania and one of the country's oldest cities. It stretches along both banks of the fast flowing Neris River, and is set among hills pine forests. Vilnius is very old city indeed. The honor for founding Vilnius is justly given to Gediminas (a Lithuanian Duke) in the year 1323. Having declared Vilnius his "royal town", Gediminas created the conditions for its subsequent growth as the political, economical and cultural center of Lithuania. The fortress on Castle Hill was used for defense purposes and was called the Upper Castle.
Following the craftsmen in other European towns at the end of the 15th century, Vilnius craftsmen began to join together by professions into guilds. Many Catholic churches and monasteries appeared in the town. Stone buildings sprang up inside the Lower Castle. The new Cathedral was among them. Crafts and trade continued to develop in the 16th century. Many beautiful new buildings in the late Gothic and Renaissance style appeared in the town. The most significant event in the cultural life of 16th century Lithuania was the founding of the Vilnius Academy in 1579, which was endowed with the rights and privileges of a university. In 1795 Vilnius became the center of a new gubernia consisting of the lands annexed to the Russian Empire. A number of new Classical style buildings were built, including the Cathedral, which had been reconstructed at the end of the 18th century, a new town hall, and the Governor-Generals' Palace. In 1860, a railway, the first in Lithuania, crossed Vilnius and connected with St. Petersburg and Warsaw.

During World War I Vilnius was occupied by the Kaiser's troops for three and a half years. On 16 February, 1918, Lithuanian Council in Vilnius proclaimed an independent Lithuanian Republic. In the autumn of 1920, Vilnius and the region to which it belonged were occupied by Poland. On October 10th, 1939, Lithuania and the Soviet Union signed a treaty on mutual aid, in accordance with which Vilnius and the Vilnius Region were returned to Lithuania. In 1940, Vilnius became the capital of Soviet Lithuania, which meant it was an administrative center of occupied Lithuania.

On March 11th, 1990, the Supreme Council restored Lithuania's independence.
