Edinburgh Castle

It evolved into a military base, and held prisoners of war. Today, the Castle is one of Scotland's most famous Castles and houses the crown jewels, the stone of destiny, and the National War Museum of Scotland. It is also an Edinburgh World Heritage Site.

Palace of Holyroodhouse
Standing at the end of the Royal Mile in Edinburgh, the Palace of Holyroodhouse is the Monarchy's official residence in Scotland. Founded as a monastery in 1128, this magnificent palace has a close association with the rich history of Scotland. Explore the State Apartments, the romantic ruins of the Holyrood Abbey, and the remarkable royal gardens.

For Outlander fans, the Palace of Holyroodhouse was mentioned in the novels when Claire and Jamie visit Bonnie Prince Charlie here, where he set up his court for six weeks.

Rosslyn Chapel
Travel to Roslin and visit Rosslyn Chapel, which was built in the 15th century and today, attracts over 25,000 visitors annually. The inside of the chapel boasts ornate stonework with mysterious carvings detailing Biblical stories, morality, and nature. The chapel was also one of the locations in Dan Brown’s “The Da Vinci Code”, and was featured in the movie as well.

Linlithgow Palace
Visit Linlithgow Palace, an important royal residence that is now ruined. Enough still remains that it’s possible to imagine what life in such a vast palace must have been like. This was also the birthplace of James V and Mary Queen of Scots.

Linlithgow Palace was also a filming location for season 1 of Outlander, but fans may recognize it as Wentworth Prison instead.

Hopetoun House
Travel to the outskirts of Edinburgh to visit the Hopetoun House, which dates back the 17th century, and was originally designed by William Bruce. It is considered Scotland’s finest stately home. The façade reflects Georgian style architecture while the interior is decorated in a period manner with timely furnishings, paintings, and more. You can enjoy the beautiful gardens and follow multiple walking trails to experience it all. In Outlander, the Hopetoun House was used as the setting for the residence of the Duke of Sandringham in Season 1, Episode 10.

Gardens, Castles & Distilleries
Drummond Castle Gardens
Enjoy the beautiful scenery at Drummond Castle Gardens.  Known to be one of Europe's most impressive formal gardens, it dates all the way back to the 17th century.  The gardens you see today were redesigned in the 19th century and replanted in the 1950s, but many of the original features have been preserved, such as ancient yew trees and a beech tree planted by Queen Victoria in 1842.  The gardens have been featured in many movies and television shows, one of which is Outlander.  Fans may recognize the location as the park and orchard of France's Palace of Versailles.

Deanston Distillery (Warehouse 4 Experience)
Enjoy a journey through time, taking you back to the distillery's past as a cotton mill and through the evolution of Deanston. On the Warehouse 4 Experience Tour, taste whisky straight from the cask in the distillery's warehouse, which was converted from an old cooperage.  The distillery also has ties to the show Outlander, as the buildings were used as Jamie's cousin's wine warehouse on the docks of Le Havre.

Doune Castle
Travel to Doune to visit Doune Castle, which was first constructed in the 13th century. The castle was most likely damaged during the Scottish Wars of Independence because during the 14th century the castle had to be rebuilt.  Doune Castle was also a filming location for Outlander and was transformed into Castle Leoch, home to Colum MacKenzie and his clan.

Culross & Highland Folk Museum
Culross
The Royal Burgh of Culross is the best preserved example of a 17th and 18th century Scottish town. Explore the quaint streets with many historic buildings, the front onto the Firth of Forth, and a climb up to the ruins of the West Kirk.  Visiting here might look familiar to those who watch Outlander, as it was the setting for Cranesmuir village, and the garden behidn Culross Palace was Claire's herb garden at Castle Leoch.

Highland Folk Museum
Travel to Kingussie to visit the Highland Folk Museum, which invites you to enter the world of the Highlander from clansman to crofter. The museum brings to life the domestic and working conditions of earlier Highland peoples where you will learn how they lived, built their homes, tilled the soil, and dressed. The museum was a filming location for Outlander. The 18th century Highland crofts replica was the perfect setting for when Claire joins Dougal and his followers to collect rent from their tenants.

Inverness at Leisure
Spend the day at leisure to explore Inverness. You may want to stroll around the Old Town, which is home to Inverness Castle, Old High St. Stephen’s Church, and the indoor Victorian Market. Not far away from here is Inverness Botanical Gardens and popular parks.

2 Night Stay: Culloden House, Inverness

Clava Cairns
Next head to Inverness to visit the Clava Cairns, which have an atmosphere all of their own. These cairns, Built around 4,000 years ago as tombs, give their name to a set of thirty monuments which are distributed up and down the rivers around Inverness.  Clava Cairns are said to have provided the inspiration for Outlander's Craig na Dun, the fictional standing stones that swept Claire back in time.
