2 Husafell – Thermal Pools
Begin your adventure with VIP admission to Reykjavik’s Icelandic Lava Show, a unique indoor venue affording a safe way to encounter flowing lava up close. Then, head to coastal Hvalfjordur to bathe in the sea baths, natural pools where ocean water is warmed by geothermal energy. The brave may even plunge directly into the chilly waters of the fjord itself. At nearby Reykholt, visit a thermal bathing site dating back to Iceland’s earliest Viking age. Continue toward the island’s sparsely inhabited center, where you check in to your Icelandic design hotel.
Don a helmet and headlamp to delve into the lava tube of Vidgelmir, Iceland’s largest volcanic cave. During winter months, embark on a thrilling snowmobile ride onto the colossal Langjokull ice cap. Alternatively, in summer months, you may instead board a crawler for an excursion over land and ice. Descend into man-made tunnels carved deep into the glacier, exploring stages of glacial formation, blue-hued dens and even a chapel.
Today, visit Thingvellir National Park, a site of deep geological and historic significance. This rugged rift valley of lava fields straddles a division of the North American and Eurasian continental plates. Translating to “Assembly Plains,” Thingvellir also marks the site where the Vikings established the world’s first democratic parliament more than 1,000 years ago. After exploring the park, continue to Fridheimar, a geothermally heated organic greenhouse, for a tour and freshly prepared lunch. Next, visit the regularly erupting Strokkur Geyser and stunning Gullfoss, where milky green glacial water plummets down Iceland’s most famous waterfall. Tonight, check in to your luxury retreat nestled in the wild Icelandic countryside, in the darker months a prime location for viewing the northern lights.
En route back to Reykjavik, as you take in the beauty of the countryside, stop at a traditional geothermal bakery, where the earth’s natural heat is used to bake Iceland’s beloved rugbraud — Icelandic rye bread. Watch the loaves being unearthed from the hot soil and taste it on the spot, while it’s still warm, fresh and fragrant. After lunch, join your Resident Tour Director for an introduction to Iceland’s charming capital, followed by time to explore on your own. Cap things off with a festive farewell dinner.
After breakfast, take your private transfer to the airport for your departing flight.
