Abercrombie & Kent: Tailor Made Switzerland: From Zurich to Lake Geneva
Day 1 Zurich, Switzerland
Arrive in Zurich, where you are met and privately transferred to your hotel, a prestigious city landmark. Relax on your first evening in this trendy upscale metropolis set astride a river and graced with a crystal-clear lake.
Join your private guide for a walk through Zurich's charming Old Town, strolling past the traditional guild house and along quaint streets steeped in history. Visit the Linderhof Roman customs house and admire the prominent clock face of Peterskirche, a beautiful Baroque-style church. Then, wander beside the River Limmat to the picturesque lake with a shoreline adorned with historic mansions. This afternoon, learn about the craft of cheesemaking in a workshop led by cheesemakers at a small dairy. Discover how to turn fresh cow’s milk into the finished specialty cheese, try a sip of fresh whey, and then taste some authentic Swiss cheese to bring the experience full circle.
Journey overland to Interlaken, stopping in Lucerne en route for a guided walking tour of this gorgeous town noted for its medieval architecture. Listen as your guide shares historical background and introduces you to its local cuisine. View Altes Rathaus (Old Town Hall), the impressive 17th century Church of St Leodegar (Hofkirche), and the ancient Chapel Bridge. In the Glacier Gardens, see the impressive Lion Monument, a stunning sculpture of a dying lion that commemorates Swiss soldiers who died defending King Louis XVI during the French Revolution. Complete your day with a relaxing public cruise on Switzerland’s most stunning lake and marvel at the majestic mountain scenery. Afterward, continue to your hotel in Interlaken.
Venture outside Interlaken to Lauterbrunnen, an impressive Alpine valley famed for its 72 waterfalls. From here, ascend by cable car to Grütschalp railway station. Take in views of the snowcapped peaks before boarding a narrow-gauge train, which takes you on a stunning panoramic journey to the mile-high village of Mürren. Breathe in the enchanting surroundings and take photographs as you stroll its cozy, traffic-free streets. After some time at leisure, continue exploring the valley, perhaps walking to the sleepy village of Gimmelwald, a tiny hidden gem with arguably the most spectacular terrain in all the Swiss Alps. Next, cross to the other side of the Lauterbrunnen Valley to Wengen, known for its nostalgic timber chalets of the Belle Epoque era as well as for its popular ski runs. Here, make your ascent to the Männlichen, a 7,687-foot mountain, to marvel at its unrivalled views of three soaring spires: the Eiger, Mönch and Jungfrau. Finally, board a gondola for a scenic ride down into Grindelwald Valley, absorbing the breathtaking vistas, before returning to your hotel.
Today, set out on a fascinating walking tour with your local guide. Board a funicular up to a spectacular viewpoint approximately 4,200 feet above sea level. Take in the sensational aerial views over Interlaken and Unterseen as well as Lake Brienz and Lake Thun — an amazing photo opportunity. Afterward, descend to ground level for an easy stroll along the Aare River which takes you across the Aare sluice gates into the delightful old town center of Unterseen. Learn about the 13th century church and visit the old town hall with its charming square, before returning to your hotel.
Transfer to the Interlaken train station to board the GoldenPass Express to Montreux. Sit back and enjoy the gorgeous scenery from your first-class seats. Upon arrival in Montreux, you are met by your driver-guide to explore the village. Following a short stroll, begin a privately-guided tour of Chateau de Chillon, a 12th-century castle that rises romantically out of the water at Veytaux. Once used as a prison, this architectural jewel’s dark history inspired Lord Byron to write his well-known poem The Prisoner of Chillon. Following your visit, transfer to your hotel on Lake Geneva.
Leave Lausanne and head into the Lavaux wine region of Lake Geneva, famed for producing the Chasselas grape. Meet a local guide for a short hike, passing the lush vineyards that are cultivated on the steep terraced slopes of the Swiss canton of Vaud. Your challenging climb is rewarded with mesmerizing vistas over Lake Geneva followed by a stop at one of the local vineyards to sample delicious wines accompanied by some snacks. Afterward, return to your hotel in Lausanne.
After breakfast, privately transfer to the airport for your departing flight.
