A challenging hike, though not extreme in nature, you'll set out in the morning on a short drive, soon arriving at the Lapa Rios Reserve under the shade of primary and secondary rainforest as curious monkeys, parrots and scarlet macaws feed on treetop seeds and fruits. The trail descends along the ridgeline to a river crossing and two spectacular waterfalls where you can refresh in the cool, clean waters. The final stretch of the hike involves an uphill hike, and so if you are more inclined to tackle a less demanding nature experience, consider the Osa Trail Hike or the mini-rainforest ridge hike.

Another popular excursion for guests of Lapa Rios Lodge is the Matapalo Tour. This approximately two-hour light hike will introduce you to the Lapa Rios private nature reserve and the nearby beaches of Matapalo, Pan Dulce, Manzanillo, and Backwash. The adventure begins at approximately 3 pm with a short briefing before descending through the coastal forests where some of the reserve's liveliest creatures make regular appearances, including endangered scarlet macaws, white-faced capuchins, howler monkeys, iguanas, and several marine bird species. Depending on the tidal conditions, you can either explore the rocky coastline along the beach or walk under the coastal forest of wild almond trees and coconut palms before being picked up at Playa Matapalo for the short drive back to the Lodge.
