Abercrombie & Kent: Tailor Made Mongolia: Secrets of the Gobi Desert
Day 1 Ulaanbaatar, Mongolia
Arrive in Ulaanbaatar and transfer to your hotel in the heart of the Mongolian capital.
Fly to the Gobi Desert to explore this vast and diverse hinterland sprawling from the Siberian wilderness to the Tibetan Plateau. Traverse the dunes of the Gobi’s Moltsog Els by Bactrian (two-humped) camel, taking in a sweeping desert-scape witnessed by few outsiders. Continue on to a deluxe ger camp frequented by archaeologists, filmmakers, and other intrepid travelers. In the evening, stargaze and glamp from your stylish ger.
Set out by 4x4 to the Yol Valley, a narrow, craggy chasm of the verdant Gurvan Saikhan Mountains. In the afternoon, choose from lodge-based activity options, including biking, hiking around Bulagtai mountain, horse riding and archery.
Devote your day to exploring locations associated with the region's rich connection to paleontology. Begin by visiting an escarpment of white sandstone that once encased the famous “Fighting Dinosaurs,” the fossils of a protoceratops and a velociraptor locked in combat position. Discovered in the 1970s, Tugrugiin Shiree helped further Mongolia’s standing as one of the world’s most important countries for paleontology. In the evening, explore the mysteries of the fossil-rich Flaming Cliffs as you learn about a groundbreaking wealth of paleontological discoveries, including the first dinosaur eggs revealed to modern science.
Fly back to Ulaanbaatar for a closer look at the capital’s iconic landmarks. Begin at Gandan Khiid Monastery, a beloved cornerstone of the resurgent Buddhist community. Having survived the Stalinist purges of the 1930s, today the structure houses a 75-foot copper and gold statue of the Buddha. Next, tour the Chinggis Khaan Museum, the largest museum in Mongolia, with over 10,000 artifacts on display and stroll Sukhbaatar Square, home to the Great Khan’s Memorial. Finally, take in a traditional Mongolian cultural performance featuring dancers and khoomi throat singers.
After breakfast, you are transferred to the airport for your departure.
All fares are quoted in US Dollars.
