This 5-day round-trip from Edinburgh takes in the best of the Central Highlands before focusing on the Isle of Skye.
After a night in Edinburgh (we strongly recommend booking an extra day or two), set out for the photogenic Central Highlands, including the village of Dunkeld, and the Grampian and Monadhliath Mountains. You’ll visit ruined cathedrals and catch a look at Ben Nevis, Britain’s highest mountain. Visit Loch Luanie, and pass by Eilean Donan, a restored castle on a small tidal island where three lochs meet. Go on to picturesque town of Plockton, your gateway to the Isle of Skye.
The Island itself is one of Scotland’s most fascinating areas, but it’s known for changeable weather. Your guide will choose the itinerary best suited for the day, keeping you comfortable and maximising your photo opportunities. Visitors frequently get the chance to see whales, basking sharks, and other wildlife before returning to Plockton. Your second day on Skye takes you to the Glenbrittle waterfall, and by ferry over to Mallaig, one of Scotland’s busiest small harbours. Harry Potter fans will recognise the Glenfinnan Viaduct immediately, though others will still find it a highlight of the drive.
Stay overnight in Fort William, then return to Edinburgh via one last scenic drive. Follow the shores of Loch Linnhe to Glencoe, and the wilderness of Rannoch Moor. Doune and Stirling Castles highlight the rest of the trip, until you arrive back in Edinburgh in the early evening.
