1 Arrive Barcelona, Spain

Artist Antoni Gaudí made the paintbrush-straight avenues and leafy squares of the Catalan capital his living studio, and his imagination lives on in the mosaics of Parc Güell or in the gingerbread spires of Sagrada Família. From the tangled lanes of the Gothic Quarter to the beaches of Barceloneta, a lifetime could fly by basking in the city’s cultural riches, from art galleries filled with Mirós and Picassos to restaurants that reach the same dizzying heights as the chapel-crowned hilltop of Tibidabo.

2 Barcelona | Gaudí’s Legacy

Explore the city with your private guide, taking in the magnificent Gothic cathedral along with Gaudí’s masterpieces: Casa Mila, with its wave-like façade; impressive but still incomplete La Sagrada Familia; and Parc Guell, a village unto itself of fluid, organic shapes and dazzling colors. At Casa Battló, follow a guided tour of the building with an open-air recital on the rooftop terrace, sipping a cocktail to live musical accompaniment.

3 Barcelona | Gothic Quarter and Sidecar Tapas Tour

Venture into the medieval Gothic Quarter, where narrow, labyrinthine streets and quiet squares are quite distinct from the rest of the city. Your guide introduces you to the magnificent 13th-century Barcelona Cathedral, notable for its fine Gothic chapels, medieval choir stalls and shady cloister. And yet the grand old Spanish capital is as much the masterpieces that hang in the Prado and the Reina Sofía as it is the dusty, raucous bars of La Latina, the impassioned roars that ring through the Santiago Bernabéu stadium or a sunset picnic beneath the madroño trees of Buen Retiro Park.

5 Toledo or Segovia | Explore Your Way

Today, you may choose a full-day excursion to Toledo, visiting its sixth-century Cathedral, and proceeding to the church of Santo Tome, to view El Greco’sThe Burial of the Count of Orgaz. Stop at the 14th-century El Transito Synagogue, and tour the House and Museum of El Greco. Alternatively, explore one of Castile y Leon’s most enchanting cities, Segovia, with its Roman aqueduct and towering Alcazar, an archetypal fairy-tale castle. Just outside Segovia, visit the sumptuous royal palace of La Granja de San Ildefonso, with its delightful gardens and elegant rooms.

6 Córdoba | Jewish Quarter and Mezquita

Walk the flower-filled streets of Córdoba’s Jewish Quarter and visit the medieval Mezquita, a UNESCO World Heritage Site. From its humble beginnings as a small Christian Visigoth temple, the site was greatly expanded by the Muslims and is today considered a superb example of Moorish architecture.

7 Granada | The Alhambra

On a walking tour with a private guide, visit the Alhambra with its fortress, Royal Palace and lovely gardens. From Granada, take a charming regional train to Córdoba to marvel at the Great Mosque, with its Christian baroque nave.

8 Ronda and Seville | Into the Arena

Ronda is a city dramatically perched high above a deep gorge, and where you join your local guide on a stroll along narrow streets and visit the Plaza de Toros (bullring), an impressive arena with Moorish architecture. As intoxicating as a cold Cruzcampo lager on a summer’s day, Seville is a breathless dance through every sultry Spanish daydream. Beneath the minaret-turned-belltower of the Giralda, one of Europe’s largest old towns spreads out in a web of tiled courtyards and cobbled, brightly colored squares, where ladies fan themselves beneath the orange trees.

9 Seville | Iconic Cathedral

Explore the historic heart of Seville, including the 15th-century cathedral, one of the most breathtaking in all of Christendom, and see La Giralda, Seville's most famous monument. Visit the Alcazar, a magnificent 14th-century Mudejar palace that is one of the oldest royal residences in Europe still in use. Take the time to wander through the Barrio de Santa Cruz with its maze of narrow streets, whitewashed houses, small squares and flower-filled patios.

10 Seville | Jerez de la Frontera

Venture south of Seville into the Andalucian countryside to Jerez de la Frontera, famous worldwide for its sherry, brandy and horses. Visit the Royal Andalusian School of Equestrian Art to see either a dressage show or training. Round the day out at one of the many sherry bodegas, or cellars, for a tour and a tasting of this renowned fino wine.

Seville

Seville is one place most beloved by visitors to Spain. Although today Moorish influence is architectonically most evident - Andalusia was occupied by Moors for about 800 years - it has been a cultural center long before. Seville was home of famous and infamous figures of history, the legendary "Don Juan" started from here to conquer the hearts of women across all Europe, while Columbus started from a port close to Seville to discover a new world. Prosper Merimée's "Carmen", who couldn't make her decision between the officer Don José and the bullfighter Escamillo, can still be watched today in opera houses. Seville is the very heart of Andalusian culture and the center of bullfighting and Flamenco music. Take it easy and interrupt sightseeing from time to time to have a few "tapas", those typical "small spanish dishes", and a glass of Sherry wine in one of the many bars in this city.

Today's Cordoba is as impressive and surprising as its past. In the 11th century it was one of the most important capitals in Europe. People of the most different cultures and religions - Jews, Muslims and Christians - have lived peacefully together, and important philosophers, scientists and artists emerged from here. Cordoba has interesting aspects, including its great monuments - the world-famous Mezquita, the Moorish mosque - and museums. Cordoba is as a lively town in the best Andalusian tradition, a town of Flamenco and bullfighting, and one of the most attractive destinations in southern Spain. The Great Mosque, which took up Roman architectural traditions, made use of columns from older buildings around, and added the Muslim sentiment of the abstract and the limitless room. The double arches are representative for the architecture dominating North Africa. Another splendid example of Muslim inheritance in Spain is the old Ummawiyy castle, Alcázar. The main attraction here are the gardens, lavish, extensive, and with water in a central role.

Located in central Spain, this former capital of the Spanish Empire was named a UNESCO World Heritage Site in 1986. As one of Europe’s oldest cities, Toledo is home to many historical sites, including the Alcázar Cathedral and the Zocodover, a central market place. Art enthusiasts will want to visit the Museo de El Greco, designed as a recreation of the home of El Greco (a Toledo native), which contains several of his most important paintings. Toledo is also famous for its production of Manchego cheese and marzipan. Stop by one of Toledo’s many restaurants to experience authentic Castile–La Mancha cuisine.

Barcelona

Barcelona, the self-confident and progressive capital of Spain, is a tremendous place to be. Though it boasts outstanding Gothic and Art Nouveau buildings, and some great museums – most notably those dedicated to Picasso and Catalan art – it is above all a place where there's enjoyment simply in walking the streets, stopping in at bars and cafés, drinking in the atmosphere. A thriving port and the most prosperous commercial centre in Spain, it has a sophistication and cultural dynamism way ahead of the rest of the country. In part this reflects the city's proximity to France, whose influence is apparent in the elegant boulevards and imaginative cooking. But Barcelona has also evolved an individual and eclectic cultural identity, most perfectly and eccentrically expressed in the architecture of Antoni Gaudí. Scattered as Barcelona's main sights may be, the greatest concentration of interest is around the old town (La Ciutat Vella). These cramped streets above the harbor are easily manageable, and far more enjoyable, on foot. Start, as everyone else does, with the Ramblas.
