The city of Córdoba, surrounded by the soaring Sierras de Córdoba mountains, was born when Alto Perú linked up with Río de la Plata on the Camino Real (Royal Trail). The Valdes Peninsula, 665 mi/1,070 km southwest of Buenos Aires, Argentina, is a marine-life preserve for sea elephants, sea lions, maras (huge rabbits), Magellanic penguins (best seen October-April on Punta Tombo), rheas (ostrichlike birds) and other animals, as well as whales and migratory birds.
The peninsula is set between Viedma and the nearby resort of Puerto Madryn, which makes a comfortable base for exploring the area.
There is an assortment of small hotels and apartments for rent in Puerto Piramides, the only embarcation point for whale-watching expeditions from the peninsula, and only a smattering of places to eat. Walking around the coast, however, and listening to the whales expelling air is one of the world's great free activities. Public transport does reach this area.
Accommodations are available on the Valdes Peninsula at Faro Punta Delgada (http://www.puntadelgada.com), a base for marine research that offers meals, lectures, hikes and horseback riding.
While you're in the area, visit the charming Welsh-influenced town of Trelew for a proper afternoon tea. From Trelew, the Welsh town of Gaiman makes a nice day trip. Settled in the 1870s, the town is one of the few places in the world where the Welsh language is still spoken (outside of Wales), and the town retains other elements of its heritage in teahouses and a museum.
Patagonia begins in central Argentina, about 450 mi/725 km southwest of Buenos Aires, and stretches from the Rio Colorado to the Strait of Magellan. This vast, beautiful region is a haven for naturalists and adventurers. It comprises almost 30% of Argentine territory and is filled with a rich diversity of plants and animals, including guanacos, penguins and elephant seals; windswept and barren terrain; lakes and unspoiled nature.
It's a popular destination for those who like to fish, especially November-May, when trout and salmon can be hooked in the rivers and streams flowing through the Andean foothills. Big-game hunting is also a popular sport in Patagonia.
There are three major areas: the Rio Negro and Neuquen Province (access via Bariloche); Chubut Province (includes Puerto Madryn, Gaiman, Los Alerces National Park and Comodoro Rivadavia); and Santa Cruz Province (Rio Gallegos and Glaciers National Park).
Layered clothing, including a windbreaker, is a must, as it can dip below freezing traveling south, even during the hemisphere's summer months.
Colonial Cordoba, Argentina, the nation's second-largest city, lies 400 mi/645 km northwest of Buenos Aires in the center of a many-rivered region. Although it receives few tourists, the area will appeal to anyone attracted to a relaxed, natural lifestyle amid rolling hills and valleys (the land is semiarid, despite the river's presence).
Don't miss the cathedral in the center of town, the university (Argentina's oldest and most prestigious, founded in 1613) and the Museum of Regional History. The city's 17th- and 18th-century Jesuit Block and estancias are a UNESCO World Heritage site.
Three popular resort towns are located nearby: Villa Carlos Paz, a scenic half-day trip from Cordoba, and Mina Clavero, a bit farther afield and boasting many natural swimming pools. Villa General Belgrano, meanwhile–which is named for the general who created Argentina's flag—is also worth a visit for its German culture and architecture. It's at its busiest in spring, when the German-founded town celebrates Oktoberfest. Located in the rolling green hills about two hours south of Cordoba, revelers visit from all around the country, keen to sample craft beer from the area and celebrate as if they were in Munich.
Most people enjoy one night in Cordoba, although if you're a fan of colonial architecture, you'll want at least another day. The laid-back nature of the city and its small satellite towns in the province make it a refreshing alternative to busy Buenos Aires for those looking to be in the great outdoors.

The country was founded here in 1580, and today the most important governmental buildings are located here including Casa Rosada (Government House), Cabildo (City Hall) and Catedral Metropolitana (Metropolitan Cathedral). Continue through the cobblestoned streets of San Telmo neighbourhood, where the original porteños (Buenos Aires residents) settled in the early days. The next stop is picturesque La Boca, home to Caminito, perhaps the city's most photographed street thanks to its corrugated iron and brightly coloured houses. This block houses one of the few outdoor museums in the world, where artists exhibit work, related to the influence of mainly Italian immigrants who arrived at this port at the end of the 19th century. La Boca is home to the legendary football (soccer giants) Boca Juniors, whose colours of blue and yellow adorn most of the houses and stores in this neighbourhood. Drive towards Palermo, passing through Puerto Madero, a regenerated area where redbrick warehouses have been transformed into trendy restaurants and bars.
Once in the northern area of the city, drive past Palermo Chico with its impressive townhouses, tree-lined boulevards, and parks. Palermo Soho, on the other hand, combines the flavour of an old, working-class neighbourhood with some contemporary details, including ethnic restaurants, design stores and bars. The bohemian atmosphere makes it popular with Argentines as well as foreign visitors, and restaurants cater to all palates. Continue to Recoleta, one of the most elegant and sophisticated districts, visit Nuestra Señora del Pilar Church and Recoleta Cemetery, known for its rich architecture and famous personalities whose mortal remains it treasures.
