Day 1 Arrive in Bangkok
Welcome to Southeast Asia! Since most flights arrive in Bangkok in the evening, we encourage you fly in at least one day ahead of schedule to help overcome jet lag before the tour begins. You may even choose to fly in a few days early to explore this fascinating city, which has many sightseeing possibilities. From the airport, catch a complimentary hotel shuttle or take the five-minute walk via an air-conditioned underground walkway.

Day 2 Fly to UNESCO-Listed Luang Prabang

Meet your MT Sobek representative this morning and transfer to the airport for the flight to Luang Prabang, capital of the first Lao kingdom and now a UNESCO World Heritage Site. Located on the Mekong River in a lovely mountain-encircled setting, Luang Prabang is renowned for its historic Buddhist temples, about 32 of which date from the 14th century. Luang Prabang is unhurried, relaxed, and perfect for strolling its ancient lanes and alleyways. Upon arrival, meet your local guide, transfer to the hotel, enjoy a city walking tour, then meet for a welcome dinner.

Day 3 Explore Luang Prabang’s Temples & Cruise the Mekong
2-hour Mekong River cruise
Begin today at the former Royal Palace, now the National Museum. Visit Wat Mai, with its unique five-tiered roof and golden bas-reliefs, and admire Wat Sene's beautiful golden facade. Venture to stunning Wat Xieng Thong, rich with golden gates, ornaments, and colorful murals. Then board a private longtail boat for a scenic two-hour ride up the Mekong River to Pak Ou Caves, filled with thousands of Buddha statues. Back in Luang Prabang, climb Mount Phousi for a panoramic view of the city and countryside before visiting a hill tribe market.

Day 4 Nature & Culture around Luang Prabang
After breakfast, transfer to Kuang Si Waterfalls and spend the morning walking around the cascading falls and gorgeous turquoise pools. Enjoy lunch on the terrace of Ock Pop Tok, one of the best views on the Mekong. Then take an optional afternoon visit to Ock Pop Tok Living Craft Center, where you will learn about the traditional handicrafts of Laos, or just relax.

Day 5 Experience the Tak Bath Ceremony, Mt. Phousi & Wat Visoun

Rise early this morning to witness the Tak Bath ceremony. During the ceremony, devoted residents of Luang Prabang kneel on the sidewalk, bearing food in their hands, which they offer to the monks as they walk by clad in their saffron-orange robes. Later visit the fresh market in town, climb Mt. Phousi, Luang Prabang's sacred hill and visit Wat Visoun, the oldest temple in the city. This afternoon take a flight to Siem Reap.

Day 6 Explore Majestic Angkor Wat & Angkor Thom

This former Khmer Empire capital is now the gateway to Cambodia's most sought-after tourist attraction: the Angkor temple complex, which you'll spend the next couple of days exploring. Nothing prepares you for your first view of Angkor Wat, the world's largest religious edifice, which you behold today in the morning light. Built in the 12th century, its labor-intensive construction is a magnificent achievement of architecture and artistry. The temple is decorated with more than 2,000 Apsara dancers, and its walls are covered with a stunning array of stone carvings and bas-reliefs depicting mythological and historical events. Trekking from temple to temple is a unique way to see these magnificent ruins: glimpses of small temples can be spotted amongst dense jungle, towers appear looming overhead, and the sheer number of ruins along the way is staggering. Later, make your way through the forest to the ancient walled city of Angkor Thom. Enter the city through the South Gate, impressively carved with elephants and four giant faces. The path is flanked by a row of 54 sculpted deities on one side and the same number of demons on the other, both holding a sacred Naga snake, symbolizing the struggle between good and evil. Top off your day with a serene sunset cruise on the Angkor Thom moat.

Day 7 Experience Ta Prohm and Banteay Srei
Today begin by exploring Ta Prohm, which has been relatively untouched since its discovery. Unlike the other Angkor monuments, it remains overgrown by the jungle, so today looks very much as most Angkor temples did when European explorers first stumbled upon them. Then visit the "precious gem" of the Angkor area: Banteay Srei, or Citadel of the Women. This well-preserved temple is built of pink sandstone seen nowhere else in Angkor and displays some stellar examples of classical Khmer art. Stop at a local pagoda for a private blessing ceremony with Buddhist monks.

Day 8 Fly to Ho Chi Minh City

This morning fly to Ho Chi Minh City. Upon arrival, check in to the hotel. In the afternoon, take a walking tour of the vibrant city, including Notre Dame Cathedral, the 19th-century post office, the opera house, and town hall. After dinner, take an exciting jeep ride around Saigon.

Day 9 Fly to Hue & Explore Ancient City Sights

Fly to Hue, the ancient imperial capital of Vietnam. Hue is to Vietnam as Kyoto is to Japan. This intellectual and cultural center situated along the Perfume River has twelve educational academies and is home to fascinating, 19th-century Imperial ruins, many of which remain damaged and serve as reminders of the Tet Offensive of 1968. Today visit the unusual royal tombs of monarchs from the last dynasty of Vietnam. Then explore Thien Mu pagoda and, after lunch, cyclo (three-wheel bicycle taxi) through the old city to the Imperial Palace (Citadel).

Day 10 Drive to Hoi An

Depart Hue for Hoi An, a major Asian trading port in the 17th and 18th centuries whose architecture and relaxed lifestyle has changed little over the years. The scenic route passes through the photogenic fishing village of Lang Co before climbing over the Pass of Ocean Clouds. In the afternoon, set off on a walking tour of the old city. Visit the former merchants' homes, the 400 year-old Japanese Covered Bridge, and a colorful local market.

Day 11 Visit My Son

Start your day with a trip to the capital and religious center of the former Champa kingdom, My Son. Situated in a lush green valley, the red brick towers and sanctuaries date from the seventh to the 13th centuries. Return to Hoi An and enjoy a free afternoon to relax, shop, or explore on your own. Day 12 Explore the Wonders of Hanoi

Fly to Hanoi, a governmental center of almost three million people. Founded in 1010 as Thang Long, Hanoi's narrow tree-shaded streets are filled with lovely examples of French colonial architecture. After lunch, see Ho Chi Minh's Mausoleum and the "Hanoi Hilton" Prison. Spend some time exploring the old town by cyclo, visiting streets that specialize in hardware, funerary items, carpentry, and textiles. Continue to Hang Be Market and Hoan Kiem Lake.

Day 13 Embark on a Lan Ha/Halong Bay Overnight Junk Cruise

Drive to Lan Ha/Halong Bay and board a boat for an overnight cruise on a junk, a wooden Chinese sailing ship. From the water, enjoy spectacular views of this UNESCO World Heritage Site famous for its emerald-green waters and its mystical landscape of 3,000 towering limestone islands. Continue to Ba Trai Dao beach in Lan Ha Bay - a separate section of Halong Bay. This is a quiet paradise known for its pristine beaches. Here you can kayak or simply enjoy a swim. Later you can catch the sunset over the Gulf of Tonkin and then join a traditional cooking class on the junk.

Day 14 Cruise Lan Ha/Halong Bay & Return to Hanoi

After awakening aboard the boat, greet the day with a morning tai chi exercise and an opportunity to view the sunrise over the bay. After breakfast, visit a beautiful limestone grotto, and then return to the boat for a final glimpse of Lan Ha/Halong Bay while cruising back to the dock. Head back to Hanoi and enjoy a farewell dinner with the group as well as a water puppet show.

A province of southern Laos, 325 mi/525 km southeast of Vientiane, Champasak was a part of the Khmer Angkor Empire between the 10th and 13th centuries. Starting from Pakse, the burgeoning provincial capital founded by the French in 1905, Champasak's heritage is best explored by riding a riverboat (both public ferries and private charters are available) down the Mekong to sleepy Champasak town. From there, you can hire a three-wheeled tuk-tuk to nearby Vat Phu, the impressive hillside ruin of a temple complex that was once an outpost of Cambodia's Angkor civilization. The ancient temple dates from the sixth century. Constructed on several levels, visitors can enjoy fantastic views across the plains. The temple complex has UNESCO World Heritage Site status and is one of the most important cultural sites in Laos.
If time allows, continue by boat to Si Pan Don, a stretch of islands in the Mekong also known as the Four Thousand Islands for the sandbars that form in the river during the dry season; then proceed to Don Khong, a charming island of rural villages, and Khon Pha Pheng, a series of thundering waterfalls just above the border with Cambodia (about a half-day's journey from Wat Phu).

On arrival to Saigon (Nha Rong Port), drive 20mins to the city centre for a tour of some of Saigon’s historic landmarks reflecting its French and Chinese influences. Visit the Notre Dame Cathedral, a red brick edifice with twin spires constructed from materials imported from France (entrance is only permitted when no services are being performed). Then head across the square to the Central Post Office, completed in 1891. Appreciate the restored exteriors of the Saigon Opera House and the elegant City Hall (the former Hotel de Ville), two of Saigon’s most stunning colonial monuments. If time permits, we will visit the iconic Ben Thanh Market, one of the earliest surviving structures in Saigon and popular wholesale market for local handicrafts, textiles, souvenirs and street food.
Drive to the former residence of the US Ambassador of South Vietnam in the early 1960s, Mr. Henry C. Lodge Jr., who supported the overthrowing of the South Vietnamese Government. Enjoy a cold drink while watching a 10min documentary film about Saigon during that time.
After lunch on your own, we then drive to Saigon’s Chinatown to visit the beautiful Thien Hau Pagoda, built by the Cantonese community in the early 19th century to honour the Goddess of the Sea. Take time to make a wish, write it on a small card and attach it to one of the incense coils according to local custom. Continue your visit to FITO, the first museum of traditional medicine in Vietnam, offering insight into the history and application of traditional medicine in everyday life before taking the scenic route through the city back to the ship.

On arrival to Saigon (Nha Rong Port), drive 20mins to the city center for a tour of some of Saigon’s historic landmarks reflecting its French and Chinese influences. Meet with a local cultural and history researcher at your hotel lobby and take a short trip to local coffee shop for an overview of the impressive history of the city once known as “The Pearl of the Orient”. Then take a step back in time to visit several of the very best examples of “storytelling” architecture. Start at Jade pagoda established in the early 1900s to get a glimpse of ancient history when a group of Chinese fled the new regime to Saigon around the end of 17th century under the reign of Lord Nguyen.
Then wind your way to Archbishop's Palace – with a prayer house more than two hundred-years old (outside visit) as the home for the first French Catholic missionary. Gain an overview about the first approach of the French during the Cochinchina period in the early 18th century. Stroll around the University of Social Sciences & Humanities which used to be the 11th infantry regiment colonial military barracks for an insight into French campaigns against Viet Minh at the time. Your stop will be at the former residence of the US Ambassador, Henry C. Lodge in the 1960s for a drink and watch 10-min movie about Saigon back in the day.

On arrival to Saigon (Nha Rong port), disembark the ship and meet your guide. Commence with a visit of the shrine outside of the US Consulate then continue to the former CIA building (outside visit only), where helicopters evacuated the remaining US citizens in 1975. Head to the rooftop café of the Rex hotel, a familiar landmark for Americans during the Vietnam War. Sit down for a drink, enjoy the view and this piece of history which your guide will help to explain. Then visit the Reunification Palace for a guided tour of the former headquarters of the South Vietnamese Government and residence of the presidents. Drive to the former residence of the US Ambassador of South Vietnam in the early 1960s, Mr. Henry C. Lodge, who conducted a mission to overthrow the South Vietnamese Government. Watch a 10 minutes documentary film about Saigon during that time while enjoying a cold drink. Then drive to a secret weapon chamber which VC used as a place to hide and store weapons during Vietnam War. Then weave through tiny back alleys and meet and chat with the locals who are living in tiny houses. Head to a historic venue for a late lunch of “pho” (noodle soup). The house number 07 on Ly Chinh Thang Street (former Yen Do street) is now known as Pho Binh restaurant which used to be the headquarters of Viet Cong Commanders where they gathered to plan for the 1968 Tet Offensive. Take a walk upstairs to learn more about the history through the family’s photo collection. Then drive back to the port to embark the ship.

On arrival to Saigon (Nha Rong port), disembark the ship and meet your guide. Drive 20 minutes to Ben Thanh market to buy all the fresh ingredients before continuing an historic Ambassador's home for a private hands-on cooking demonstration. The American Ambassador to South Vietnam in the 1960s, Mr. Henry Cabot Lodge, carried a mission of overthrowing the southern government at that time. When Lodge arrived in Saigon, an old villa in District 3 was converted into the Ambassador’s residence. Mr. Lodge lived in this home between1960-1965 and the architecture is a mix of Vietnamese, French and American. Today it remains a private residence owned by Trails of Indochina and it has been fully restored to its former glory. The guide will provide an orientation tour of the house while the chef prepares the ingredients. Learn typical Southern style dishes throughout the morning. The chef will show you how to serve each dish before the meal, and you will need to master the chopsticks before you can savor your own culinary creations in the old world ambiance of the villa.
After lunch, transfer back to your ship.

Full Day Hue Classic Tour / Chan May Port
On arrival to the port (Chan May port) disembark and meet your guide. Then drive 1.5 hours to Hue along a scenic coastal route passing mountains on one side and the ocean on the other. Upon arrival Hue, enjoy a short cyclo ride from your hotel to the Imperial Citadel at the centre of the Complex of Hue Monuments inscribed by UNESCO as a World Heritage site. Enter through the towering main gate and appreciate the magnificent architecture and gardens while your guide explains the events and the intrigue surrounding the former royal court. Despite being heavily bombed during the Vietnam War, there are some incredibly well-preserved sections intact and others which are being carefully restored.
Lunch is on your own.
After lunch, drive to the Thien Mu Pagoda, Hue’s best-preserved religious monument. Built in 1601, the seven-storied tower pagoda, perched on top of on a hill overlooking the Perfume River, is one of Vietnam’s most recognizable icons.
