2 Sao Miguel Island, The Azores – The Green Island

São Miguel is the largest island in the Portuguese archipelago of the Azores, and a place where volcano-fed springs boil amid lush emerald-green landscapes.

Often referred to as “The Green Island,” São Miguel is famous for the Furnas volcanic valley, center of unique geothermal activity, and whose fertile volcanic soil contributes to a uniquely flavorful food scene. One of the Azores’ signature dishes is cozido, a blend of meats and vegetables slow-cooked naturally in the volcanic Furnas region. See how a master chef assembles the ingredients and sets it cooking. While it simmers, visit a dairy farm where cheese is made. Watch the craft in practice firsthand and sample a variety of local cheeses, from fresh and creamy to dry and well-aged. This whets your appetite for your cozido, cooked to perfection and served picnic-style against the green-carpeted landscapes. Cap off your culinary exploration with a therapeutic tea tasting, where you sample a diverse array of medicinal blends brewed from local spring water. Explore as you like the next day on your chosen Design Your Day activity.

  • Ride an e-bike through Ribeira Grande on a guided tour of the North Coast, filled with history, nature and splendid seaside views
  • Saddle up for a horseback ride across the amazing Azorean landscape, following old roads through charming villages
  • Watch for whales and dolphins on a morning cruise with a marine biologist
  • Take a chef-led food tour of Ponta Delgada, stopping at markets, traditional eateries and specialty food shops to sample the local flavors
  • Get your blood pumping with a coasteering activity on the south coast, swimming, climbing and jumping from cliffs amid the incredible volcanic rock formations
  • Embark on a kayaking adventure along the coast and discover the best-hidden treasures, the high cliffs, bays, small caves and unknown beaches

5 Algiers, Algeria – Mediterranean Mosaic

A unique crossroads of French and Ottoman influences, Algiers is a diverse metropolis of whitewashed Ottoman palaces and well-curated museums and galleries.

Extending along the Bay of Algiers, Algeria’s capital invites exploration with wide, open boulevards, savory food and freely extended hospitality. Get to know the city on an open-air tour, passing Haussmannian facades, the Grand Boulevard and the Martyrs’ Monument, ending at the majestic Jardin d’Essai du Hammam. A short distance from Algiers is Tipaza Archaeological Park, where you view a treasure trove of ancient Roman ruins, seaside theaters and exquisite mosaics. Continue to Cherchell, a historic gem nestled on the Mediterranean coast, and wander through its picturesque streets. Back in Algiers, set out on your chosenDesign Your Day activity.

  • Explore the intriguing Casbah, a living labyrinth of narrow alleys, traditional homes, mosques and palaces recognized as a UNESCO World Heritage Site — a sensory journey through the soul of the city
  • Visit Djamaa al-Djazair (The Great Mosque of Algiers), a bold architectural statement that bridges tradition and modernity, and then stop at another symbol of Algeria’s religious diversity, Notre-Dame d’Afrique
  • On an art history tour of Algiers, visit the Algiers Museum of Fine Arts, one of the most prestigious art museums on the African continent; the Bardo Museum, set in an 18th-century Moorish palace; and the Museum of Islamic Art, housing sweeping panorama of Islamic heritage

Lying near the heart of Central Asia, Kazakhstan blends nomadic traditions, Silk Road heritage and modern innovation into a culture that feels both ancient and ever on the move.

Begin with rare, after-hours access to the Central State Museum, where a senior curator leads you through silent galleries of ancient artifacts, intricate nomadic costumes and treasures hidden from public view. Step deeper into tradition at the Museum of Musical Instruments, where an ethnomusicologist introduces you to the sounds of the steppe before a private performance fills the air with centuries-old melodies. 23 Sofia, Bulgaria – Old-World Traditions

Home to some of Europe’s oldest traditions, Bulgaria offers tantalizing glimpses of a half-remembered past amid cobbled streets, ancient ruins and rituals faithfully carried to the present day.

Bulgaria carries the heritage of many ancient civilizations, and nowhere is this more evident than in historic Plovdiv, possibly the oldest town in Europe. Wander through the cobblestone streets of the Old Town and let the city’s timeless charm reveal itself. Visit the ancient Theater of Philippopolis, still a working open-air concert venue more than 2,000 years after it was built. See also the Stadium of Philippopolis, hidden beneath the city center — this Roman marvel once held over 30,000 spectators. Stop for lunch at an art gallery, reserved exclusively for you, and wander at your leisure among the collection. Sofia’s heritage is equally ancient, and your local guides bring it to life as you visit Roman remains, the Church of St Sophia, the city garden and National Theater, and Aleksandar Nevsky Cathedral, among other sites. Privately experience the mystical Kukeri festival tradition, a spellbinding cultural ritual featuring masked, fur-clad dancers in handcrafted costumes. Spend an afternoon exploring via your selected Design Your Day option.

  • Discover Bulgaria’s Christian artistic heritage at the Icon Gallery, along with a live performance of sacred music by a renowned vocal ensemble
  • Ride an authentic vintage tramcar on a charming tour through the heart of Sofia, passing some of the city’s most emblematic buildings and landmarks
  • Unwind at your hotel with a rejuvenating spa experience.

For the grand finale to your adventure, gather at a restaurant nestled in the Vitosha Mountains, surrounded by fresh air and beautiful woods. As you tuck into your traditional Bulgarian feast, watch a folkloric performance followed by a thrilling display of traditional fire dancing, an ecstatic ritual recognized by UNESCO as part of its Intangible Cultural Heritage list.

Featured Destinations
London
London is undoubtedly one of the world's finest cities. In addition to numerous monuments from its more glorious past, London is equally well-known for its pageantry and tradition. London has something for everyone - wide boulevards buzzing with excitement far into the night, quiet squares and explorable alleyways. Visit this famous city's parks, museums, galleries, monuments, abbeys and churches, skyscrapers and ruins, Georgian squares. Take in such events as the Ceremony of the Keys at the Tower, or the Changing of the Guard at Buckingham Palace, or even one of the many theatrical productions. Some of the most exclusive shops are found along Oxford, Bond and Regent Streets. An old favorite and one of the world's premier institutions is Harrods - offering everything from Chanel suits and sliced salmon to caviar and even pets.
Sofia
Sofia is capital of Bulgaria with a motto “Ever growing, never aging". Influences of many different cultures can be spotted through the city. Alexander Nevski Memorial Church has a gold dome considered one of the finest pieces of architecture in the Balkans. Other points of interest include 4th-6th century Church of St. Sofia; Boyana Church, a good example of 11th century East European Medieval art; and 15th century Dragalevtsi monastery. The National Palace of Culture is the Balkans' biggest congress center. Vassil Levski monument is where the main architect of the campaign to free Bulgaria from oppression of the Ottoman Empire was hanged by Turks in 1873. The National History Museum, Archaeological Museum and National Natural History Museum are there. There are many areas around downtown for nightlife. Sofia sits near Mount Vitosha and during the winter months this is a prime skiing spot.
Almaty
The bridge between Asia and Europe is Almaty, the largest city in Kazakhstan with a growing population of 1.5 million. Also known as the "city of apples," Almaty grows a variety of apples used both as consumption and scientific research. At night, travelers navigate their way to its bright city lights and on a clear day, the snow-capped mountains are kissed by the sun in the background. While visiting Almaty, take advantage of the aerial tramway zipping you to the top of Kok Tobe. Practice your ice skating in Medeu, the highest Olympic sized ice stadium. Stroll through Arbat, a tree-line pedestrian street or gaze in awe at the grandeur of the Presidential Palace.
Mahe, Seychelles
Mahé, being the largest of the Seychelles islands, beckons with Creole restaurants, craft shops and art galleries. The nearby waters surrounding Mahé are perfect for swimming, body surfing and snorkeling.
Victoria Falls
The town of Victoria Falls is a pleasant place, created for visitors. There are hiking routes and rental bicycles. There are also trinket shops, selling everything from cheap T-shirts to antique African musical instruments. Carvings of masks and animals are a tradition around the area (as is the bargaining required to purchase them for a reasonable price). The Victoria Falls Hotel, a short walk from the falls, still operates in full colonial splendor and should be seen even by those not staying there. Visit Crocodile Ranch and Craft Village - a fascinating glimpse into Zimbabwean culture. Visit Livingstone, just across the border in Zambia— more than just a tourist town and more character than Victoria Falls. Another appealing side trip is to Chobe National Park, in neighboring Botswana. Chobe is one of the finest game parks in the world.
Sao Tome

Renowned for its beautiful white beaches and clear blue waters, the country's main island offers a perfect setting for those wishing to sunbathe, snorkel, scuba dive or go deep-sea fishing. If you want to swim, head to Praia Grande, Praia das Sete Ondas (best waves on Sao Tome), Praia das Pombas, Praia Piscina or Praia Jale. Divers and snorkelers will prefer the reefs off Lagua Azul, Ilheu das Cabras, Praia Pequena and Praia das Conchas.

But sand and surf aren't the whole story: At the southern end of the island, Pico de Ana Chaves—an extinct volcano that rises 5,300 ft/1,630 m—offers a challenging hike, a cool atmosphere and a beautiful view of the island. The one main road on the eastern side of the island takes about four to five hours to drive and passes many small, colorful villages.

The main city, also called Sao Tome, is attractive, quiet, clean and has many old (and decaying) Portuguese colonial buildings. Tour the 16th-century cathedral and 400-year-old Ft. Sao Sebastiao, which now houses the National Museum (lots of displays about the colonial era). Outside town, excursions can be made to the Boca de Inferno (the Mouth of Hell), a natural waterspout flowing from volcanic rock. Also worth visiting is the expansive Agustinho Neto manor house, an old colonial plantation outside of town. For a good day trip, head to Pousada Boa Vista for a bird's-eye view of the coastline and the 80-ft/25-m Sao Nicolau waterfall.

South of the capital is the village of Sao Joao dos Angolare, which has traditional bamboo homes with thatched roofs. Near Angolares is Roca Sao Joao, an estate run by local artist Joao Carlos. It contains a coffee plantation, a comfortable guest house and a restaurant serving authentic local cuisine. Porto Alegre, another plantation farther south, also has a guest house. Set on a bluff overlooking the ocean, Porto Alegre is one of the most beautiful spots on the island. (While food must be arranged in advance, aguadente—the local rum—is always available.) Just offshore from Porto Alegre is Ilheu das Rolas, a tiny island with traditional thatched huts, a blow hole and a monument marking the location of the equator. The island of Sao Tome merits three nights.

Accra
Accra, capital and largest city of Ghana, is a port with considerable industry, including the manufacture of textiles, processed food, and building materials. Government activities, tourism, and handicraft production are also important to the city's economic base. A sprawling city, Accra presents a varied appearance, with buildings of modern, colonial, and traditional African architecture.
Algiers
Algiers is the capital city of Algeria on the Mediterranean Coast. Travellers may visit some lovely beaches along the mediterranean cost, enjoy a number of outdoor activities, and enjoy the city's nightlife.

Top attractions in Algiers includes ruins founds at Djemila, prehistoric rock paintings, and shopping for textiles and crafts from an elegant blend of Arab, Berber and French cultures.
