Day 1: Welcome to Beijing

On arrival at the airport, you'll be warmly greeted and escorted to our luxurious hotel in the heart of the capital.

Day 2: In + Around Beijing

Your expertly guided, full-day exploration begins in Tiananmen Square. Covering more than 100 acres in the heart of the city with a scale reminiscent of Moscow's Red Square or the Piazza San Marco in Venice, it ranks as one of the grandest public plazas in the world. Then follow in the footsteps of Ming Dynasty emperors as you explore the magnificent palaces, courtyards and pavilions of the sprawling Forbidden City . It is said that there are 9,999 rooms within these imposing walls and although you won't see everyone, your guided tour offers a fascinating look into the splendor of Imperial life centuries ago. After a lunch of delectable dumplings, you'll tour the resplendent Summer Palace. Set on wooded hills surrounding a tranquil lake, this assemblage of pavilions, palaces and gardens offers a fascinating look into Imperial life long ago. From April to November, our tour of the Summer Palace includes a boat ride on Lake Kunming, a delightful and tranquil way to experience the architectural landmarks and sublime natural beauty of this World Heritage Site. Tonight's festive Peking Duck banquet is accompanied by wine and local beer. Meals B+L+D

Day 3: The Great Wall

The Great Wall stretches for nearly 4,000 miles across northern China - its oldest sections dating back more than 2,000 years when various states and dynasties first began to build these defensive walls. A few centuries after these earliest sections were constructed, Emperor Qin Shihuang consolidated them into a single, massive fortification to guard his empire against Hun invaders from the north. Succeeding emperors maintained, reconstructed and built anew, and much of what is seen today is the result of work that was done during the Ming Dynasty. As a result the wall is not uniform throughout its length; situated farther from the capital than other parts of the Great Wall, the section at Mutianyu draws fewer visitors and is celebrated for its many defensive towers and splendid setting amidst the rugged mountains. Ascending by cable car, you'll walk atop the Great Wall here at Mutianyu as our expert guide shares dramatic stories of its past. In the afternoon, explore the narrow lanes of a Hutong, one of the city's few remaining enclaves of traditional, centuries-old courtyard homes. Visit a local family living to gain a deeper understanding of life in Beijing's traditional neigborhoods. Meals B+L

Day 4: Fly to Xian

After breakfast, you'll be escorted to the airport for your included flight to Xian, China's ancient capital for 13 dynasties. On arrival, visit Hanyangling Underground Mausoleum. With its royal tombs, ceremonial sites and numerous other burial pits this archaeological site offers fascinating insight into life, culture and society during the ancient Han Dynasty. Aftewards, you'll be transferred to our deluxe hotel, ideally situated within the old defensive walls of the city. This evening witness the Tang Dynasty Show, accommpained by a delectable dinner. Meals B+D

Day 5: Behold the Terra Cotta Army

Farmers stumbled upon the site while digging a well in 1974; today the Terra Cotta Army is still regarded as China's greatest archaeological discovery. Set out this morning to visit the excavation site and marvel at the exquisite details of these clay warriors buried 2,000 years ago to guard the tomb of China's first emperor. It has been estimated that more than half a million laborers and craftsmen worked for nearly 40 years to complete the tomb - and the thousands of terra cotta soldiers, horses and chariots that were to serve the Emperor in the afterlife. After lunch, you'll take part in a hands-on workshop to craft your own terra cotta warriors before visitng the ancient defensive walls of the city before returning to your hotel. This evening enjoy a relaxed meal at your hotel. Meals B+L+D

Day 6: Marco Polo Fell in Love with Hangzhou… You Will Too!

After breakfast, we'll take you to the airport for your included flight to Hangzhou. Just outside of the city, you'll visit an authentic working tea plantation to spend time with the farmers amidst their lush fields. From preparing the soil to picking the tea leaves, your time on the tea plantation is a fun way to learn about the ancient techniques that ensure the high quality of the region's esteemed teas. Back in the city, head to your hotel to either relax or enjoy the lovely town with a stroll along the shores of West Lake. The town's landscapes have inspired artists and poets for centuries, and today you'll have a chance to experience its enchanting scenery for yourself. Meals B+L

Day 7: Onward to Wuzhen + The Garden City of Suzhou

Departing Hangzhou this morning, you'll travel to Wuzhen for a glimpse into what life was like during the Ming Dynasty! Set along an ancient canal that stretches north from Hangzhou toward Beijing, Wuzhen is an enchanting water town famous for its centuries-old homes and shop-houses, now splendidly restored. Ancient stone railings, picturesque courtyards and arching bridges of wood and stone add to the evocative ambiance. Not only the architecture, but the rhythms of daily life have also been preserved here - making Wuzhen a veritable living museum. Experience it all with our guided tour, including a boat excursion along its ancient canals - a delightful way to experience the evocative atmosphere of this timeless place. Then continue to Suzhou and check in to our 5-star hotel. This evening, visit the serene Master of Nets Garden, one of the city's finest classical gardens, where you can marvel at the harmonious balance of nature and architecture, creating a peaceful escape from the urban bustle. Finally, experience the charm of Suzhou's traditional arts during the Garden Night Show, featuring folk dances and live performances that highlight the region's rich cultural history. Meals B+L+D*The Master of Nets Garden will be changed to a daytime visit for those traveling between November and March.

Day 8: Discover Suzhou

After breakfast, visit Hanshan Temple, which offers a serene escape with ancient bells, peaceful gardens, and rich Buddhist history. The temple, over 1,400 years old, reflects Tang Dynasty poetry and tradition. Next, learn how silk is made at a local workshop before traveling to Shanghai where you'll check in to our luxury landmark hotel. Meals B+L

Day 9: Out + About in Shanghai

Today's full-day sightseeing begins at the Shanghai Museum East, highly regarded for its expansive collection encompassing thousands years of Chinese arts and culture - including ancient bronzes, celadon pottery, precious jade, Buddhist sculptures and exquisite Ming Dynasty furniture. Along the elegant waterfront Bund, you'll learn about the impressive landmarks built more than a century ago by Japanese and European trading companies. After lunch at Casanova, one of the city's most stylish restaurants, you'll continue your sightseeing at the lovely Yu Yuan Garden. Originally established in 1577 by a government official for his aging parents, the garden's unique ensemble of plantings, lotus ponds, winding paths, pavilions and bridges is revered as a superb example of classical Chinese landscaping during the Ming and Qing Dynasties. Shanghai: Jewish Quarter Tour (4 hours)

Half day tour to Jewish Quarter in Shanghai

Background

Shanghai was the only city in the world that provided a safe home for World War II refugees without papers. As a result, approximately 32,000 Jews, known among themselves as "Shanghailanders," settled in this fascinating Chinese city. Like the names Schindler, Wallenberg and Sugihara, Shanghai has become synonymous with rescue and refuge during the fascist-dictated times when 6 million Jews perished and at least 35 million Chinese were killed and wounded. At one point, there were at least seven synagogues in Shanghai, but today very little evidence of this once vital community remains.

Highlights

Ohel Moishe Synagogue. The Ohel Moishe Synagogue is a European style temple that was once the centerpiece of the Hongkou District. The original synagogue was founded in 1907 by a Russian Jew, and was moved to this site twenty years later. Once a synagogue for Orthodox Russian and German Jews, it was also at various times, the headquarters of the Zionist youth organization Brith Trumpeldor (Betar) and the isolation ward of the Shanghai Mental Hospital. The synagogue is now a recognized historical site and a Jewish Refugees Memorial has been built next to it.

Suzhou
Located on the Yangtze River Suzhou is located in the Jiangsu Province, which borders Shanghai. This is a city that revels in culture and is known for the Kunqu Opera, Suzhou Opera and for ballad-singing. Suzhou silks are also world famous.
Hangzhou

Hangzhou is one of the important tourism cities in China, famous for its natural beauty and historical and cultural heritages. Hangzhou is the capital of Zhejiang province.

Hangzhou is located on the low reaches of Qiantang river in southeast China, with a distance of 180 kilometers to Shanghai. It is one of the key cities in the Yangzi Delta area.

Xi'an
Xi'an - with five million inhabitants and capital of Shaanxi Province - is one of the more pleasant of Chinese cities, more prosperous than any other city in inland China except Chengdu, with streets full of Japanese cars, stores flooded with temptations, and stylish locals in new discos. It's far richer than the surrounding area, a fact which becomes clear after a bus ride into surrounding plains. The city is also a primer in Chinese history, as between 1000 BC and 1000 AD it served as imperial capital for eleven dynasties. Find a wealth of important sites and relics hereabouts: Neolithic Banpo, the Terracotta Army of the Qin emperor, the Han and Tang imperial tombs, and in the city itself, the Goose Pagodas of the Tang, the Bell and Drum towers and Ming city walls, as well as two museums holding a treasury of relics from the most glamorous parts of Chinese history. The city is very popular with foreign residents, and many come to study, as the colleges are regarded as some of the best places to learn Chinese.
Beijing

Beijing is the country's economic, cultural and transportation center as well as a famous historical capital of China. Located in northwest North China Plain, Beijing is the second largest city in China with a population of more than 11 million and is ideal to visit all year. There are numerous museums and libraries with the largest collection of books in the country. It also serves as a center for science and technology. It is a hub of communications, with good railroad and air links with all parts of China and with major cities of the world, thus facilitating the rapid development of tourism as an important industry in Beijing. Beijing is an ancient city with a long cultural history. The four feudal dynasties--Jin, Yuan, Ming, and Qing had all set up their capital here and it became a most concentrated place of the country's scenic spots and historical sites. The best known are the Palace Museum, the Summer Palace, the Great Wall and the Temple of Heaven. Beijing aims to develop into a modern international metropolis..
