Day 2 Traverse City, Michigan, USA
Dunes, tall ships & wine on Lake Michigan's coast

You might be surprised to learn on your Michigan tour that the state's western coast is a land of vineyards and sandy beaches as well as really impressive sand dunes. This morning you'll see some of the spectacular Lake Michigan shoreline as you travel along the Pierce Stocking Scenic Drive and through the Sleeping Bear Dunes National Lakeshore; ranging in color from the palest champagne to vibrant sienna, the constantly shifting dunes can be as high as 400 feet! This afternoon, board the 114-foot schooner Manitou for a private tall ship cruise on the sparkling waters of Lake Michigan's Grand Traverse Bay. Wind up a great day with a winery tour and wine-pairing dinner at Chateau Chantal Winery on the Old Mission Peninsula in Grand Traverse Bay.

Meals: B, D

Day 3 Mackinac Island, Michigan, USA
Old-time music, Petoskey & Mackinac Island

On your first stop today, music fills the air at the Music House Museum, displaying rare antique musical instruments and music-making machines from between 1870 and 1930; feel free to hum along during your visit! Then wind your way along the shoreline of beautiful Grand Traverse Bay as your Michigan tour continues toward the historic Straits of Mackinac; this strip of water connecting Lake Michigan and Lake Huron saw both booming commerce and some pretty spirited conflicts during the active fur-trading era of centuries ago. Stop in quaint Petoskey for lunch en route to Mackinaw City, from which a ferry carries you across the strategically important straits to historic Mackinac Island, where no cars are allowed... so you'll ride a horse-drawn carriage to your accommodation at the world-famous Grand Hotel, among the most celebrated hotels in America! This stately hotel's front porch, reputed to be the longest of its kind when it was built in 1887, is still a very popular gathering place for guests and local residents alike.

Meals: B, L, D

Day 4 Mackinac Island, Michigan, USA
Spend a day on magical Mackinac Island

The tiny treasure known as Mackinac (pronounced "Mackinaw") Island remains much as it was when the first Europeans settled the island centuries ago. Folks get around here by foot, by bicycle or by horse... because motorized vehicles are not permitted on the island. Although the year-round human population is only about 600 residents, the horse population can be as high as 500 during the summer months! A sightseeing tour by horse-drawn carriage reveals all that is magical about Mackinac Island and is sure to be a highlight of your Michigan tour. You'll see Fort Mackinac, built by the British to guard the Straits of Mackinac during the American Revolution, as well as "downtown" Mackinac Island with many historic homes and grand Victorian cottages. You'll also learn more about your celebrated hotel at a presentation by a local resident historian who shares unique anecdotes about this famous landmark. The remainder of the day is yours to explore the island as you please; you're bound to discover things that capture your interest.

Meals: B, D

Day 5 Bay City Michigan
An architectural gem in Midland

Leaving peaceful Mackinac Island behind via ferry to the mainland, continue on to Midland, where you'll explore the home and studio of noted 20th-century architect Alden B. Dow, son of the founder of the Dow Chemical Company, who was a student of Frank Lloyd Wright. Dow's innovative use of geometric planes, angles and landscaping elements to integrate his home into its natural surroundings has earned the home the designation as a National Historic Landmark. Arrive late afternoon at your riverfront hotel in Bay City, where you'll have dinner at your leisure this evening.

Meals: B, L, D

Day 6 Dearborn and Detroit, Michigan, USA
Bavarian Frankenmuth & The Henry Ford

You might think you've landed in Bavaria today when you visit the little village of Frankenmuth, founded by German pioneers in the 1840s, for lunch and some free time to poke around. Continue on to Dearborn, a city instrumental in America's automobile culture, where a guided visit to The Henry Ford is a fascinating, "must-do" experience on any Michigan tour. Historic trains, automobiles, airplanes and more help illustrate the American experience of progress and innovation between 1800 and 1950 - along with Dymaxion House, created by R. Buckminster Fuller; and the homes and workplaces of ground-breaking innovators such as Thomas Edison, the Wright Brothers and Harvey Firestone. Tonight you'll begin a two-night stay at the historic (and newly renovated) Dearborn Inn located just steps away from the Detroit Zoon, The Henry Ford, Greenfield Village and the Henry Ford Estate. During dinner at the hotel tonight, enjoy a Tauck Exclusive - a private Motown musical performance by a live band.

Meals: B, L, D

Day 7 Dearborn and Detroit, Michigan, USA
Dearborn, The Ford Rouge Factory & Detroit

Begin the day with a look at a state-of-the-art automotive manufacturing facility when you take the impressive Ford Rouge Factory Tour in Dearborn, connecting the innovation of the past with the technology of the present and future. Then head to Detroit, where a city orientation tour introduces you to the "Motor City," historic home to the American automobile industry; see the Renaissance Center, Comerica Park (home of the Detroit Tigers), the Fox Theatre and more. Return to Dearborn, where the afternoon is free for your own further exploration and discovery amidst the living history and Americana of Greenfield Village; in true Tauck Style, when you take an included spin in a Model T, you won't have to pay for the gas! Please join us at our farewell cocktail reception and dinner this evening, and enjoy the opportunity to share your memories of your Michigan tour with those who shared the adventure with you.

Dearborn
Consider a city that is a world famous industrial center and the site of a multi-million-dollar commercial development. At the same time, it is one of America's leading tourist attractions, a college town, and the kind of residential community that wins accolades for cleanliness and public services. This is Dearborn, Michigan - a city with a rich heritage and the promise of an even brighter future.
Detroit
Detriot has historic landmarks, museums, sightseeing, shopping, and accommodations to fit every budget. It is filled with history, culture and modern sophistication all at the same time. The new casinos bring Las Vegas thrill, and the Great Lakes cater to the water enthusiast usually headed to a coastal destination. Detroit has attractions and activities for a family on vacation, someone visiting for business, or a couple searching for romance. Boating tours, museums, historic shopping, fine dinging, and educational attractions including: The Henry Ford Museum, Detroit Science Center and the City of Troy Museum are all within minutes from anywhere in Detroit. Detroit offers culture, sophistication, old world charm, new world excitement and glamour.
Bay City
Bay City is located near the Saginaw Bay on Lake Huron, and is a major entertainment and recreation center. Bay City was first settled by Leon Trombley in 1831, and quickly became a bustling community known for lumbering, milling and shipbuilding. Visitors today enjoy the many festivals and celebrations taking place in Bay City, as well as the many antique and specialty shops and fine restaurants and pubs that line the waterfront.
Mackinac Island
Visit Mackinac Island and experience the sites and sounds of a bygone era. Located between Michigan's upper and lower peninsulas, the Island offers unforgettable natural and historical treasures surrounded by the sparkling blue waters of Lake Huron. From romantic weekend getaways to fun filled days with the family, Mackinac Island has something for everyone. Ride a bicycle around the 8-mile lakeshore path, or enjoy the quaint Victorian architecture from a leisurely ride in a horse drawn carriage.
Traverse City

Although it's known as the Cherry Capital of the World, Traverse City seems to do an even better job of growing motels, restaurants and other tourist-related sites: It's the center of the popular vacation destinations in the northwestern Lower Peninsula. Located 240 mi/390 km northwest of Detroit, the city sits at the foot of Grand Traverse Bay, an absolutely beautiful area where the water is various shades of blue and forested shores rise up from the bay.

Traverse City celebrates its cherry heritage at the National Cherry Festival (concerts, parades, regatta), which usually takes place in early July. For a look at the fruit industry, take one of the orchard tours at Amon Orchards—they run regularly during the festival and by appointment at other times of the year. You can pick your own cherries at Amon in season (late June-early July). Although lots of orchards are still found in the area, they seem to be becoming fewer and fewer. In many cases, they're being replaced by vineyards.

A lot of Traverse City's activity happens along Highway 31/72, where most of the motels are located. Traverse City State Park and several other beaches are also along this stretch. Downtown Traverse City is a lively place loaded with specialty stores, bars, brewpubs, coffeehouses and restaurants. The Old Town Playhouse offers stage productions.

East of town, overlooking Grand Traverse Bay, is the Grand Traverse Resort, home to The Bear, a golf course designed by Jack Nicklaus. Spruce Run and Gary Player's The Wolverine are also part of the resort.

To the north of the city, a long, thin peninsula juts out into the bay. For a great scenic drive, head north on Highway 37, which runs the full 16-mi/25-km length of the peninsula, past cherry orchards and wineries. At the far end, in Old Mission, is a reconstruction of the building where Peter Dougherty ministered to the Ottawa and Ojibwa peoples in the 1800s. At the very tip of the peninsula are a lighthouse and park.

North of Traverse City, around the east side of Grand Traverse Bay, are a number of inland lakes surrounded by summer cottages and small villages. These are great waters for small pleasure boats, because many of the lakes are linked together by channels. Torch Lake is the gem of this string, an 18-mi-/28-km-long stretch of water that is an intense shade of blue. Though parts of the lake are very deep, there are sandbars that function as drive-up beaches for boaters, and there are also a number of restaurants that cater to boat traffic.

To the northwest of Traverse City is the Leelanau Peninsula (which forms the tip of the pinky finger when you view the Lower Peninsula as a hand). This is a region of scenic roads (many of them popular with bicyclists), farms, charming villages and vineyards (including Leelanau Wine Cellars, Black Star Farms and Good Harbor Vineyards). In addition to Lake Michigan and Grand Traverse Bay, which surround the peninsula, there are several inland lakes, including Lake Leelanau.

Leelanau is also the place to go for gambling: Suttons Bay (25 mi/40 km north of Traverse City) is where the Chippewa tribe runs the large Leelanau Sands Casino and Lodge. Suttons Bay also has a number of shops, galleries and restaurants. A little farther north, in the tiny village of Omena, make a stop at the Leelanau Cheese factory, which specializes in making raclette cheese.

On the west coast of the peninsula, on Lake Michigan, is the small village of Leland. Fishing charters, cruises and ferries to the Manitou Islands depart from the harbor, and the town has a small museum with exhibits about the history of the area. There are also several beaches in the immediate area, which yield views of North Manitou Island.

Jimmy Buffett fans may want to stop in at The Bluebird, a downtown restaurant and bar. It's rumored to serve the dish that inspired Buffett's song "Cheeseburger in Paradise." And no visit to Leland would be complete without having a drink at The Cove, an open-air bar and restaurant, where you can watch charter boats docking and kids fishing in the river.

Although ski hills are spread throughout Michigan, one resort of note in this part of the state is Crystal Mountain to the southwest of Traverse City. Crystal Mountain offers 58 trails on a 375-ft/116-m vertical drop and it is snowboarder-friendly.
