5-Nights Isle of Skye & the West Highlands Small Group Adventure from $1,451

Goway Travel

OFFER ID 1609089

This small group experience (maximum 16 participants) gets you off the beaten track so you get a real feel for the country. Our guides are hand-picked for their pride and passion for their country. Transportation is in modern Mercedes Benz mini-coaches and accommodation is in 3 star country hotels.

This 5-day round-trip from Edinburgh takes in the best of the Central Highlands before focusing on the Isle of Skye.

After a night in Edinburgh (we strongly recommend booking an extra day or two), set out for the photogenic Central Highlands, including the village of Dunkeld, and the Grampian and Monadhliath Mountains. You’ll visit ruined cathedrals and catch a look at Ben Nevis, Britain’s highest mountain. Visit Loch Luanie, and pass by Eilean Donan, a restored castle on a small tidal island where three lochs meet. Go on to picturesque town of Plockton, your gateway to the Isle of Skye.

The Island itself is one of Scotland’s most fascinating areas, but it’s known for changeable weather. Your guide will choose the itinerary best suited for the day, keeping you comfortable and maximising your photo opportunities. Visitors frequently get the chance to see whales, basking sharks, and other wildlife before returning to Plockton. Your second day on Skye takes you to the Glenbrittle waterfall, and by ferry over to Mallaig, one of Scotland’s busiest small harbours. Harry Potter fans will recognise the Glenfinnan Viaduct immediately, though others will still find it a highlight of the drive.

Stay overnight in Fort William, then return to Edinburgh via one last scenic drive. Follow the shores of Loch Linnhe to Glencoe, and the wilderness of Rannoch Moor. Doune and Stirling Castles highlight the rest of the trip, until you arrive back in Edinburgh in the early evening.

5 nights from $1,451 per person

Featured Destinations
Isle of Skye
The Isle of Skye in northwestern Scotland, the largest of the Inner Hebrides, separated from the mainland by a narrow channel. The capital of the island is Portree. A popular tourist resort, Skye is also home to the Dunvegan Castle, which was erected during the 9th century. Dunvegan Castle is said to be the oldest inhabited castle in Northern Scotland, having been occupied by the Chiefs of MacLeod continuously, for over seven centuries and still today remaining the Ancestral home of the present chief, John MacLeod of MacLeod, the 29th of the line, and his family. Breathtaking in every respect, the Castle should not be missed. Maybe while at the Castle you’ll learn the secret of the precious Fairy Flag.
Skye & Lochalsh
Of all the variety of Highland landforms, the mountain profiles of Skye create the strongest sense of awe, and have drawn visitors to the island since the days of Sir Walter Scott and JMW Turner. Skye is joined to the mainland by the Skye Bridge at Kyle of Lochalsh and it also has two mainland ferry connections: from Mallaig and Glenelg, the latter summer only. These offer flexibility for journey planning. However, Skye has no monopoly on spectacular mountain scenery. Lochalsh on the mainland is also rugged hill country, with Kintail and Balmacara in the care of the National Trust for Scotland.
Fort William
At the southern end of the Great Glen, this area's main town is Fort William, a major and well-resourced touring and route centre for the West Highlands. The area also takes in the Highland landscapes between Loch Linnhe, the major sea-loch at the south of the Great Glen, and the western seaboard itself. These include the lands of Ardnamurchan, Ardgour, Morvern and Moidart - rugged landscapes notable for their soft and mild Atlantic climate, and - in places - their lush growth of mossy, fern-rich woodlands.
Edinburgh
Dominated by the ramparts of Edinburgh Castle, this picturesque city offers shopping on Princes Street, the grandeur of the Royal Mile, St. Giles Cathedral and historic Palace of Holyrood House, where Queen Mary lived and many Scottish kings were wed. Or venture across the moors to marvel at the scenic Highlands.

Edinburgh: Introducing Edinburgh - 4 hours

The capital city of Scotland is undoubtedly one of the most dramatically-situated cities in Europe; this setting has had a profound effect on its historical development and today your expert local guide unravels these themes on a half-day sightseeing tour. The focal point of the city is Edinburgh Castle, a royal fortress that symbolises the Scottish nation and is home to the 'Honours of Scotland', the oldest set of Crown Jewels in the British Isles. From the impressive military installations there are stunning views of the city. The Royal Mile stretches down on from castle through the 'Old Town' of Edinburgh, at the heart of which is St. Giles Cathedral. This fascinating Gothic church is topped by a fine medieval spire in the shape of a crown. At the foot of the Royal Mile is Holyrood Palace, the Queen's Official Residence in Scotland*. The palace's neighbour is the much more recent Scottish Parliament Building; its striking contemporary designs are in eye-catching contrast to the classical style of the palace.
