Costsaver: Road Trip USA - Coast to Coast (Los Angeles to New York)

Day 1 - Arrive Los Angeles
Welcome to the land where it's always 70 degrees and sunny, Los Angeles. The place where dreams are made (and broken), La La Land is a city that exudes talent, creativity and drive, spilling out into its countless theaters, galleries, museums and street art hubs. Arriving today, you'll meet up with your Travel Director in the afternoon to get a glimpse of what's to come on your LA to New York tour, before hitting the streets to explore LA your way.
Accommodations: Sonesta Los Angeles Airport LAX

Day 2 - Los Angeles – Las Vegas
Ready to get stars in your eyes? This morning's tour with your fellow travelers will show you the all out glitz and glamour of LA, the palm lined streets of Santa Monica, the iconic Sunset Boulevard, and the Hollywood Walk of Fame, which is just a stone's throw from the beacon of Hollywood, the Dolby Theater, home of the Academy Awards. Leaving your dreams of fame and fortune behind, you'll then head on to the neon lights of Las Vegas, an entertainment oasis surrounded by dry desert with a reputation almost as big as the fortune's many have made (and lost) here. Tonight, why not see the city at its finest on our ‘Sights and Lights' tour.
Accommodations: Golden Nugget & Casino

Day 3 - Las Vegas Free Time
With a free day in Sin City, it's entirely up to you how to explore the entertainment capital of the world. The dazzling casinos, the glittering rooftop pools, the all you can eat buffets - they're all here for the taking. You could get out of town on our excursion to Hoover Dam for the chance to admire the USA's biggest man made reservoir Lake Mead, or enjoy a performance at Vegas! The Show, crooning to the best loved hits of Sonny & Cher and Elvis. Tonight, head over to the Downtown area to explore the artsy Fremont East district.
Accommodations: Golden Nugget & Casino

Day 4 - Las Vegas – Flagstaff
It’s really time to kick things off on your USA road trip package, as today we get our kicks on Route 66! A symbol of the American dream, Route 66 has been eternally immortalized by literature and movies and still to this day represents the ultimate American road trip. You'll be stopping by Kingman and Seligman en route to Flagstaff, two iconic outposts that are a real taste of all things Americana complete with classic motels, kitsch petrol pumps and steaming slices of apple pie. Feeling like you've taken your place in American history, you'll finish up this evening in the Arizonan escape town of Flagstaff.
Accommodations: Best Western Pony Soldier Inn & Suites

Day 5 - Grand Canyon
Nothing can quite prepare you for your first glimpse of the Grand Canyon. One of the world's 7 natural wonders and a UNESCO World Heritage site, it's estimated to be around 2 billion years old, with a layer of rock at the bottom of the canyon said to be some of the oldest exposed rock on the planet. Take your time exploring the incredible geology of the land, or to make your visit extra special, why not treat yourself to our Choice Experience that could see you soaring in a helicopter or aircraft over the stunning North and South Rims.
Accommodations: Best Western Pony Soldier Inn & Suites

Day 6 - Flagstaff – Monument Valley
This morning, you'll venture on to explore a Hollywood great, Monument Valley. Immortalized as the setting for countless movies and TV shows, Monument Valley is an emblem of the wild west, with rusty red spindles and grand buttes soaring 1,200 feet skyward from the barren valley below. Named the ‘Valley Between the Rocks' by the Navajo people who have lived here for centuries, you'll likely feel very small and insignificant here as you learn about the geology and history of the area from a local Navajo guide on an open-air vehicle tour. This evening, join in the Earth Spirit Theater and view an original John Wayne movie filmed in and around Monument Valley.
Accommodations: Goulding's Lodge, Monument Valley
Meals: Breakfast

Day 7 - Monument Valley – Durango
Visit the UNESCO World Heritage listed Mesa Verde National Park. Home to the Pueblo people for over 700 years, Mesa Verde protects nearly 5,000 archaeological sites including 600 cliff dwellings and offers a fascinating glimpse into Native American history. Not done with historical insight just yet, you'll then finish today in the old Colorado mining town of Durango, which boasts tasteful hotels, lovely tree lined streets and Victorian-era saloons reminiscent of the town's wild west history.
Accommodations: Hampton Inn Durango

Day 8 - Durango – Santa Fe
Leaving Durango behind, today you'll head deeper into the wild west as you journey towards one of America's oldest and most beautiful cities, scorching Santa Fe. Founded by Spanish missionaries in 1610 and the capital of New Mexico, Santa Fe claims the title of the nation's highest state capital, sitting at an elevation of 7,000 feet. With the towering Sangre de Cristo mountain range surrounding you, admire the rambling abode houses and baroque churches as you explore this timeless, soulful city. Have time for lunch in Taos, NM before heading to Santa Fe Plaza, the city's cultural heart, to admire crafts and jewelery sold by Native American sellers. Or, dive into the Mexican infused culinary scene as you sip margaritas and toast to the electric sunset.
Accommodations: Fairfield Inn and Suites by Marriott Santa Fe
Meals: Breakfast

Day 9 - Santa Fe Sightseeing
Slap on the sunscreen and head out on a sightseeing tour this morning, learning more about the 400 year old history of The Plaza before stopping by the Palace of the Governors, the oldest public building in the United States. Visit St. Francis Cathedral where European and New Mexican influences collide, then this afternoon and with time to yourself why not get to grips with Santa Fe's famous art scene. The distinctive neighborhoods of Barrio Analco and Canyon Road are both well worth a visit, then finish the day eating tacos on Guadalupe Street.
Accommodations: Fairfield Inn and Suites by Marriott Santa Fe

Day 10 - Santa Fe – Amarillo
Cruising along Route 66 once again, you'll be heading on to the Cadillac Ranch, located just outside of Amarillo. An emblem of Route 66 and a testament to America's long standing love affair with wheels, the Ranch features 10 Cadillacs buried face down which visitors are encouraged to leave their mark on. Finally you'll arrive in Amarillo, where you will be staying for the night. Head out this evening to explore Amarillo your way or rest up at your hotel in anticipation of the big city adventures tomorrow will bring.
Accommodations: Drury Inn & Suites Amarillo

Day 11 - Amarillo – Fort Worth
It's big, it's brash, it's flashy - it can only be the ‘Big D', Dallas-Fort Worth, the buzzing metroplex of Texas. Synonymous with the Dallas Cowboys and the TV show that became an American household name, Dallas also has a darker history as the spot of JFK's assassination in 1963. However you explore today, you'll likely end up with a cold beer in hand, toasting to another amazing day of adventure in the USA.
Accommodations: Holiday Inn Express Fort Worth Downtown
Meals: Breakfast

Day 12 - Dallas Fort Worth Sightseeing
Waking up to an entirely free day in Dallas-Fort Worth, this morning you'll have the chance to visit a place of scandal and romance. The famous home of the Ewing Family, Southfork Ranch has a special place in the nation's hearts as the star of the hit TV show Dallas. Visiting here you can tour the mansion and re-live exciting moments from the show. This afternoon, venture out with your fellow travelers to experience a slice of true Texan life at the Fort Worth Cattle Drive as you watch real Texan handlers drive their longhorn cattle through Exchange Avenue in the Stockyards National Historic District. This evening, why not opt for an optional Texas barbecue feast at Cooper’s Old Time Pit Bar-B-Que? Think smoky, mesquite-grilled meats, homemade sides and true southern hospitality.
Accommodations: Holiday Inn Express Fort Worth Downtown
Meals: Breakfast

Day 13 - Fort Worth – Lafayette
Leaving the cowboys and big city antics of Dallas behind, today you'll head on to Lafayette. This bubbly little university town is a real under the radar gem and may just end up being one of the surprising stand out stars of your entire trip.
Accommodations: Springhill Suites Lafayette South
Meals: Breakfast

Day 14 - Lafayette – New Orleans
Head towards the ‘Big Easy'. Famed for its Mardi Gras celebrations and diverse culture, everything in New Orleans is a little larger than life. The weddings are bigger, the funerals are louder, the food is richer, and every single day is a cause for celebration. Perhaps enjoy a Beignet from Cafe du Monde while tonight it would only be right to sample some good old fashioned Creole cooking.
Accommodations: La Quinta Inn and Suites by Wyndham New Orleans Downtown
Meals: Breakfast

Day 15 - New Orleans Free Time
Keep the NOLA highlights coming this morning with a sightseeing tour where you'll make stops at the French Quarter and St. Louis Cathedral. Explore the Big Easy your way this afternoon. Head back to the cute cafes and grand mansions of the Garden District, have your fortune told in Jackson Square, or learn more about the city's fascinating voodoo culture by exploring a cemetery, taking a peek around the elaborate stone crypts and mausoleums. If the swamps and bayous of the Mississippi have caught your attention, why not join a boat trip through the Jean Lafitte National Historical Park and Preserve. Led by a local native guide, you'll have the chance to spot ‘gators, eagles, snakes and egrets as you cruise these lush waters. This evening, we doubt you'll be able to resist the prospect of an optional steamboat jazz dinner cruise.
Accommodations: La Quinta Inn and Suites by Wyndham New Orleans Downtown
Meals: Breakfast

Day 16 - New Orleans – Memphis
Enjoy a morning free to explore your way then head over to the artistic Fondren District for a spot of lunch. Next up, this afternoon you'll arrive in the music obsessed city of Memphis, home to the King who needs little introduction. Musical history and influence run through the city and bluesy Beale Street is a fine example of this, but the city is also a historical heavyweight for the role it played in the Civil Rights Movement. After all, it was here in 1968 that Martin Luther King was assassinated. Tonight you'll no doubt be keen to put Memphis' legendary barbecue reputation to the test. Make sure you're hungry as the huge portions of smoky pulled pork and juicy ribs will defeat even the keenest of eaters.
Accommodations: Crowne Plaza Memphis Downtown
Meals: Breakfast

Day 17 - Memphis Sightseeing
We hope you didn't fill up too much at last night's barbecue. After an iconic breakfast, today will be special for Elvis fans as you make the pilgrimage to Graceland. This afternoon, enjoy a Choice Experience at Sun Studio, where Elvis was first discovered back in 1954. Toe tapping your way into the evening, head over to Beale Street for dinner at the Blue's City Cafe, a lively joint that serves up Southern treats accompanied by live music, naturally.
Accommodations: Crowne Plaza Memphis Downtown

Day 18 - Memphis – Nashville
Enjoy an Iconic Breakfast at The Arcade before trading one rhythmic city for another. Good old fashioned southern hospitality will welcome you to the ‘Music City' today, otherwise known as Nashville. A place of pilgrimage for country music lovers, Nashville has been attracting icons since the 1920's and while country music wasn't born here, the city is certainly responsible for the evolution of the genre. Get your bearings on a sightseeing tour that will take you to Riverfront Park, Tennessee State Capitol and the 132 acre Centennial State Park, where you'll be transported straight to Athens as you admire the Parthenon, an amazing exact replica of the original.
Accommodations: The Inn at Opryland
Meals: Breakfast

Day 19 - Nashville Sightseeing
Delve into the incredible history of Nashville today with a visit to Music Row, stopping off at Studio B where industry legends like Dolly Parton and the Everly Brothers have all recorded albums. No Nashville tour would be complete without a snoop around the Country Music Hall of Fame, and your Travel Director will take you here to discover the history and enjoy priceless memorabilia from Hank Williams and Loretta Lynn. With the rest of the day free to explore your way, why not join your fellow travelers to scout out the tastiest hot chicken and biscuits of the city, an iconic dish of the south.
Accommodations: The Inn at Opryland

Day 20 - Nashville – Pigeon Forge
It's back on the road today as you head towards the bright lights of Pigeon Forge. A vibrant little city that gets its name from the Little Pigeon River that runs through the middle of it. Pigeon Forge sits in the shadows of the Great Smoky Mountains and prides itself on its entertainment capacity. Arriving here with a free afternoon, you could visit OJ Simpson's white Ford Bronco, ride a 200ft high Ferris wheel or step onboard a detailed replica of the Titanic, where the hallways, cabins, parlors and Grand Staircase of the world's most iconic ship have been meticulously reproduced.
Accommodations: Ramada Pigeon Forge North

Day 21 - Pigeon Forge – Great Smoky Mountains – Natural Bridge
It's a short drive into the Great Smoky Mountains National Park this morning, the most visited national park in all of the United States. Simply stunning is the best way to describe this place, where lush forests and fields of wildflowers bloom all year round. Take your time exploring here, following the various walking routes that will take you past streams, rivers and waterfalls, with Clingman's Dome looming from up above. Keep an eye out for black bears and visit a section of the Appalachian Trail, before heading on to Natural Bridge.
Accommodations: Wingate by Wyndham Colorado Springs
Meals: Breakfast

Day 22 - Natural Bridge - Shenandoah NP - Washington, D.C.
Wake up happy in Natural Bridge before visiting beautiful Shenandoah National Park. Embark on a tour of Natural Bridge State Park this morning and bask in the magnificent sights before driving to Washington, America's capital city and the seat of political power.
Accommodations: Courtyard by Marriott Washington, DC/U.S. Capitol
Meals: Breakfast

Day 23 - Washington, D.C. Sightseeing
Today's all about unearthing the political and cultural highlights of this high flying city. You'll kick things off with a sightseeing tour that will feel more like a walk through a real life movie set, visiting icons including the massive Lincoln Memorial, the Washington Monument, and the jewel in America's political crown, the White House. With the rest of the day then free to explore as you please, the question is really where to start? Perhaps treat your cultural side to an afternoon spent browsing the museums of the Smithsonian Institution, pay a visit to George Washington's sprawling Mount Vernon Estate, or enjoy a cruise down the scenic Potomac River. This evening we've then got another treat in store - our Choice Experience Washington Illumination Tour, where you'll see DC's most famous monuments all lit up in their night time glory.
Accommodations: Courtyard by Marriott Washington, DC/U.S. Capitol

Day 24 - Washington – Philadelphia – New York City
From one American great to another, New York City beckons today, but not before a visit en route to ‘Philly'. Declared a UNESCO World Heritage city in 2015, Philadelphia is the beating heart of the USA's revolutionary history and the place where both the Declaration of Independence and the US Constitution were signed. You'll have time to eat lunch here, likely involving the city's legendary cheesesteak sandwich, before heading on to the fast and fabulous metropolis of NYC. Every inch as iconic as you've been imagining, you'll head out on an orientation tour of the Big Apple that will allow you to see Broadway, the Empire State Building, leafy Greenwich Village and the sobering 9/11 Memorial. This evening and in celebration of your final night, why not get acquainted with the city's foodie scene? From gourmet food trucks to Michelin Star restaurants, the city that never sleeps ensures you'll never go hungry.
Accommodations: Holiday Inn New York City - Times Square

Day 25 - Depart New York City
With fond memories of giant canyons, musical legends and indulgent southern food still fresh in your mind, your USA value tour will come to an end this morning. Head out for one final stroll around Central Park before heading to the airport for your onward flight. If you're not ready to say goodbye just yet, perhaps extend your stay in NYC for a few more days. In a city as varied and wonderful as New York, you're never short of new things to discover.

Lafayette

Situated on the Vermilion River about 115 mi/185 km west of New Orleans, Lafayette, Louisiana, is the center and de facto capital of Cajun Country—the area settled by French Acadians in the 1700s. There are several sights of note in the immediate Lafayette area, and the town serves as a good base for exploring the true treasures of Acadiana—the smaller towns located within a 30-mi/50-km radius.

To the north of Lafayette is the Cajun Prairie region, which is made up of smaller towns that retain their French Acadian heritage. This is a largely rural area where cattle graze contentedly and flooded rice fields double as crawfish farms.

The tranquil formal gardens of the Academy of the Sacred Heart draw travelers to the town of Grand Coteau. Fans of percussive zydeco music will gravitate toward the towns of Opelousas and Plaisance, where living legends of the style play in dance halls. Traditional Cajun music (less electrified than zydeco but no less danceable) is also a big draw in the area. Fans of the music get up early on Saturday morning to hit Fred's Bar in Mamou, a microscopic barroom-turned-dance-hall that hosts an early-morning radio program that's popular with locals and visitors alike.

Up the road in Eunice, the beautifully restored Liberty Theater features the Saturday-night radio program Rendez-vous des Cajuns. Host and folklorist Barry Jean Ancelet takes the stage 6-8 pm for a live broadcast of Cajun music, stories and culture.

Ft. Worth

To travelers unfamiliar with the city, Fort Worth, Texas, may seem like a secondary travel destination—a place to visit only after taking in all the sights of its bigger, glitzier neighbor, Dallas. (It does have to live with second billing in the "Dallas-Fort Worth" phrase used to describe everything from the shared airport to the general urban area).

But Fort Worth has an identity all its own as a travel destination. Fort Worth boasts rich western heritage (lending it the nickname "Cowtown"), a world-class arts scene, beautiful parks, casual sophistication, great sightseeing and small-town charm despite its big-city population.

A significant downtown renovation has filled the Fort Worth city center, known as Sundance Square, with such attractions as shops, cafes and inviting pedestrian areas that appeal to travelers. Residents and travelers alike enjoy Fort Worth's top-ranked museums, which have earned the city the title "Museum Capital of the Southwest." Add to this the prestigious Van Cliburn Piano Competition and the stunning Bass Performance Hall, and it's clear why Fort Worth's devotion to the arts has earned even Dallas' grudging respect.

Even though it has its share of high-tech businesses and contemporary culture, Fort Worth keeps one boot in its frontier past. The restored historic stockyards—once the world's largest—remind visitors of the city's authentic cowboy heritage.

New York City
New York City is a captivating, awesome, and glamorous empire. There are countless museums, theaters, restaurants, parks and towering skyscrapers. It is a shopping capital of the world. In midtown Manhattan are most of the designer boutiques; Fifth and Madison Avenues are locations of such world-renowned department stores as Bergdorf Goodman, Lord & Taylor and Saks Fifth Avenue. FAO Schwartz is one of the largest toy stores in the world. New York is also a world-class culinary experience - with pockets of ethnic restaurants: Chinatown, Little Italy, Little India and Little Brazil. The famous Statue of Liberty sculpture symbolizing the American Dream can be reached by ferry from Battery Park. Once the first stop for over 12 million immigrants, Ellis Island now houses the Museum of Immigration, including the American Immigrant Wall of Honor. The Art Deco Empire State Building is one of the world's best-loved skyscrapers with two observation decks. Also take time to visit the Chrysler Building, Radio City Music Hall, and St. Patrick’s Cathedral.

Pigeon Forge

Just north of Gatlinburg, Pigeon Forge, Tennessee, is one big strip of motels, fast-food and family-style restaurants, outlet malls and theaters. The most popular draw in the area is Dollywood, the theme park owned by entertainer Dolly Parton, who hails from Sevierville.

Pigeon Forge is home to several other live-music theaters in addition to those at Dollywood. These venues are modeled on the theaters in Branson, Missouri, and play host to musical revues, variety shows and performances by headliners such as Louise Mandrell. Dixie Stampede, also owned by Parton, is an elaborate dinner show with rodeo acts, musical performers and trained animals.

Plenty of other family-oriented attractions can be found in town, including waterslides, bumper boats and go-kart tracks. An unusual attraction is Zorb, a giant ball (reminiscent of a hamster toy) into which people can climb and roll down a hilly course.

Special events take place throughout the year in Pigeon Forge, including a Storytelling Festival in February, the Festival of Nations at Dollywood in the spring, and the Celebrate Freedom Festival in August.

Should malls be more your idea of fun, you'll find more than 200 factory outlets in Pigeon Forge offering bargains on a variety of products. Some of the biggest malls to look for are the Belz Factory Outlet, Old Mill Village and Pigeon Forge Factory Outlet. Remember that some retailers manufacture clothing and goods especially for their outlets, so shop carefully. When purchasing fine luggage, handbags and accessories, be sure to check return policies.

Nashville
Nashville is the perfect destination for all kinds of visitors - from music lovers to history buffs to Southern lovers to sports enthusiasts and nature lovers. Nashville is the Country Music capital of the world. Have fun searching through the past or getting close to the Country Music stars of the present. Hike, bike, golf, go for a balloon ride and take tours guiding you through the history of country music. View homes of current stars including: Joe Diffie, Bryan White, Brooks & Dunn, Lorrie Morgan, George Jones, Reba McEntire, Faith Hill and Tim McGraw, Alan Jackson, Marty Stuart, Dolly Parton and more. Find tons of historic sites from the Civil War dating back to the 1700s.
Memphis
Memphis is known as the home of Elvis Presley and as birth place of the blues. Don't forget to travel down Beale Street and listen to some of the worlds best blues bands. Hike, bike, golf, go for a balloon ride and take tours through the history of Elvis Presley's life. Don't forget some great sites in Memphis such as: Alex Haley's Home, Beale Street, and the W.C. Handy Home. Take a trip to the Memphis Zoo or jump on exiting amusement park rides at Libertyland Amusement Park.
New Orleans
New Orleans is a happy, high-spirited city with the pulsing beat of Dixieland jazz. It delights visitors with its riverboats, Creole cuisine, quaint antique shops and narrow streets of the French Quarter. While here, be sure to take a ride on one of the picturesque trolley cars. Eccentric, elegant New Orleans is strongly connected to both the Mississippi River and the South, but its identity remains aloof from any regional or even national affiliation. It reminds some visitors of European cities, in part because French and Spanish colonial architecture adds an Old World backdrop to some streets. But the feeling of foreignness goes deeper: The celebrated New Orleans atmosphere, cuisine, music, traditions and lifestyle are rooted in an embrace of the decadent and assimilation of the unconventional. New Orleans welcomes all, but is familiar to none, and the result is a city which attracts the romantic, the spiritual, the wild and the inquisitive—all while successfully promoting itself as corporate America’s playground. No matter what is expected from a visit to New Orleans, no one goes home disappointed.
Amarillo
A hard-nosed Texan cattle town, Amarillo is epitome of the Lone Star State with cowboys, oil, steak, and cacti. It is the "Helium Capital of the World" (as self-proclaimed) with a productive helium field. However, this Old West attracts its travelers to visit beautiful Palo Duro Canyon State Park. Amarillo also proudly hosts the famous outdoor musical, "TEXAS."
Santa Fe
Even though Santa Fe is capital of New Mexico, the state's third largest city, and has been around longer than all but one other city in America, it is still relatively unknown to many U.S. travelers. The city history spans almost 400 years yet much of Santa Fe is unexpected, including its Rocky Mountain climate and geography and the cultural diversity created by a mix of Native American, Hispanic and European traditions. Theater, dance, and music all play a significant role in Santa Fe's past and present and the importance of art has made the city one of the country's largest art markets. Surrounded by millions of acres of National Forest and public land, the city offers diverse outdoor activities. For the sightseer, the beauty of the area offers an amazing diversity of scenery and places to discover. Take some time to do some world class shopping or investigate why the city is a major center for alternative healing. Every visitor should explore the local cuisine.
Durango
Durango was established in 1881 as a frontier mining town. But many of the old-time settlers discovered they got more out of the scenery than the mines. Nestled in the Animas River Valley, in the afternoon shadows of the San Juan Mountains, people still get pretty much the same feeling. There’s something about being where picture-postcard beauty circles like an old wagon train. It tends to slow folks down a notch or two and let their best side catch up to them.
Monument Valley
A window into the Navajo Nation's culture rests in Monument Valley of the Colorado Plateau. For over 250,000 years sandstone masterpieces towers between 400 - 1,000 feet high photographed with scenic clouds, casting shadows, and spellbinding shapes.
Flagstaff

"Flag" (as it's called locally) is the largest population center north of Phoenix, home of Northern Arizona University and gateway for many of the state's northern travel attractions.

At 6,970 ft/2,125 m, Flagstaff's climate is very different from that found in the desert commonly associated with Arizona. You may need a sweater even in the summer, and in winter it can be bitterly cold and snowy. Enough snow falls for skiing at the Arizona Snowbowl, and the sunset views from the Snowbowl are terrific any time of year.

Grand Canyon National Park
Located entirely in northern Arizona, the park encompasses 277 miles of the Colorado River and adjacent uplands. One of the most spectacular examples of erosion anywhere in the world, Grand Canyon is unmatched in the incomparable vistas it offers to visitors on the rim. Grand Canyon National Park is a World Heritage Site.
Las Vegas
Las Vegas is one of the nation's hot spots. There are nightly shows, great dining, and world famous live entertainment to thrill and dazzle every visitor walking down the strip. Las Vegas is the largest city in the nation for gambling and entertainment. Casinos continuously amaze with their shows, attractions, and non stop gaming. Las Vegas has many local attractions and entertainment. World famous shows such as, Tom Jones, David Copperfield, Siegfried & Roy, and Steve and Eddie are here. Casinos offer live entertainment, fine dining, and all types of gambling to fit everyone's desire. Las Vegas also has great shopping, museums, and some of the nations best golf. Although Las Vegas is primarily known for gambling, everything else is worth offering here as well.
Los Angeles
Much of Los Angeles lies in a fairly flat basin, surrounded by mountains and ocean. Although the Santa Monica Mountains, one of the most unheralded of the city’s remaining natural treasures, splits LA between the familiar sights of La-La Land to the south and the charmless suburbs to the north, the metropolis is easily traversed. Places for visitors to explore include Hollywood, Mid-Wilshire, the central strip of Wilshire Boulevard with faded Art Deco "Miracle Mile" zone and good museums, and the beach towns of Santa Monica and Venice, where visitors can stroll along the former’s remodeled pier and Third Street Promenade outdoor mall, or visit the latter’s famed Muscle Beach and oceanside Boardwalk. Lengthier trips to LA may include the old-fashioned charm of Old Pasadena, home of ever-popular Rose Parade and Bowl, Downtown, site of much city heritage and setting for what skyscrapers the area does have, the South Bay, the place to find the region’s second biggest city of Long Beach, and Malibu, where visitors can try to get a glimpse of movie stars and assorted celebrities.
