Trafalgar Tours: Highlights of Singapore and Malaysia

Day 1 - Welcome to Singapore
A feast for the senses awaits in Singapore – a fantasyland of skyscrapers, lush gardens and an intoxicating mix of cultures and cuisines, from India to China. On arrival, you’ll be transferred to your hotel. Later, meet your Travel Director and fellow travelers for your first taste of Asia at Dinner.

Day 2 - See the Sights of Singapore Dive Into Culture
Tread in the footsteps of Sir Stamford Raffles, launching your city tour on the spot where it all began for colonial Singapore – Raffles Landing Site. Stroll along the Singapore River through the Colonial District and see the landmarks that remain to this day, including the former Parliament House, the Victoria Theater and the Old Supreme Court Building. Dive Into Culture and explore the contrasts of Singapore, from the red and gold façades of Chinatown to the intoxicating spice and vibrant flower garland vendors in Little India. Later, visit the UNESCO-listed Singapore Botanic Gardens and enjoy a leisurely stroll through its exquisite National Orchid Garden before spending the afternoon at leisure. Day 3 - A Day to Explore Singapore Dive Into Culture
There are few things more important to the local Singaporeans than food and you’ll discover this as you Dive Into Culture and spend the morning sampling the city’s culinary delights that reflect its multi-cultural influences, including Chinese, Malay, Indian and Peranakan. Rub shoulders with the locals at Geylang Serai market, which lies at the heart of the Malay community. Here you can indulge in all-time Singaporean favorites like Roti Prata and Thosai taken with a frothy glass of Teh Tarik. Continue to the Joo Chiat and Katong enclave where you will visit a Peranakan-style shophouse showcasing a display of local delicacies as well as artifacts, nyonya attire, bags and beaded slippers. The shop is run by family members who are committed to preserving the Peranakan heritage through their culinary and handicraft skills. Day 4 - Journey to Malacca Connect with Locals

Admire the distinct Malacca kampong stilt houses and discover the scents and flavors of local fruits, herbs and spices that infuse the delicious regional cuisine. Embark on an informative walking tour past Dutch Square with its Stadhuys and clock tower, reflecting the multi-cultural heritage of this once vibrant trading port. Ascend to the top of Malacca Hill, then stroll along the river to Kampung Kuli where you’ll discover colorful shopfronts displaying traditional crafts. Day 7 - Experience Vibrant Kuala Lumpur Make Travel Matter
We venture into the countryside this morning for a MAKE TRAVEL MATTER® Experience visit to a village inhabited by the Orang Asli, an ethnic group widely regarded as being Malaysia's original inhabitants. We’ll delve into their history and traditions during a visit to the Orang Asli Museum, then stroll around the village with a Local Specialist, observing first-hand local traditions such as bamboo cooking and weaving. We return to Kuala Lumpur, where we’ll visit Chow Kit Market and watch how the locals haggle to get the best deals. Day 9 - Off to Ipoh
Lush valleys and tea plantations provide a tranquil backdrop for today’s drive through the Cameron Highlands, Malaysia's most extensive hill station. Snap a photo of the area’s emerald landscape before driving to Perak Cave Temple, an extensive cave complex in Ipoh. Venture into the cave temple and see its beautifully painted murals and golden sitting Buddha statue, which dominates the temple. This afternoon enjoy a walking tour of the charasmatic town of Ipoh and admire the colonial-style buildings which were once home to wealthy tin miners and today house trendy cafés and shops. Walk through the old town’s narrow laneways and admire the street art that adorn its façades. Spend the rest of your evening relaxing or consider visiting the night bazaar for some retail therapy.

Our journey to Penang this morning takes us past the royal town of Kuala Kangsar where we’ll visit the majestic Ubudiah Mosque, ranked as one of Malaysia’s most beautiful mosques with its white marble and massive golden dome. But first, immerse yourself in the timeless art of crafting Labu Sayong, a traditional earthenware jug renowned for its elegant design and unique ability to naturally cool water. Later we'll drive over one of the longest bridges in Southeast Asia before arriving in Penang, which we’ll have an opportunity to explore at leisure after checking in to our hotel. This afternoon consider joining an Optional Experience to visit the majestic Kek Lok Si Temple and ascend Penang Hill by funicular railway. Day 11 - Explore Historical Georgetown Dive Into Culture
Immerse yourself in the Asia of yesteryear as you embark on a historical tour of Georgetown. Begin your journey back in time with a quick photo stop at Fort Cornwallis, where Captain Francis Light, the founder of the British colony in Penang, first landed in 1786. Your next stop is to the intricately carved Chinese clan house of Khoo Kongsi, where Chinese families of the same surname gather together to worship their ancestors. Later, see the city’s splendid colonial architecture and famous street art from the comfort of a traditional trishaw, followed by an afternoon at leisure. Your epic journey across Singapore and Malaysia almost at its end, you’ll join your travel companions for a Dinner to celebrate the highlights of your trip.

Featured Destinations
Georgetown, Penang
Penang is unique in Malaysia because it has it all: fun beaches, beautiful resorts, rich history, diverse culture and delicious food.

Penang gets its name from the Malay word 'pinang,' in reference to the areca plant, which grew on the island in abundance. In the 15th century it was a quiet place populated by small Malay communities, attracting the interest of some southern Indian betel merchants. By the time Francis Light, an agent for the British East India Company, arrived in 1786, the island was already on the maps of European, Indian, and Chinese traders. Light landed on the northeast part of the island, where he began a settlement after an agreement with the sultan of Kedah. He called the town Georgetown, after King George III. Georgetown became Britain's principal post in Malaya, attracting Europeans, Arabs, northern and southern Indians, southern Chinese, and Malays from the mainland and Sumatra to trade and settle.
Ipoh

This city in northwestern Malaysia was founded by Chinese tin miners and continues to be populated primarily by ethnic Chinese to this day. Situated 110 mi/180 km northeast of Kuala Lumpur, it is mainly a stop-off for tourists traveling north to south, but the city does have some interesting features and has been discovered by a wave of young tourists.

Apart from just wandering the streets lined with old Chinese shops, the main attractions are the two Buddhist cave temples, Sam Poh Tong and Perak Tong. The better of the two is Sam Poh Tong, which has a turtle pond, garden and vegetarian restaurant. Go during a prayer service to hear ethereal chants and drum playing. Also of interest is the spectacular limestone or karst scenery in the region. The train station is also a fine old heritage building, and the weekend markets on Concubine Lane are well worth exploring.

About 15 mi/24 km south of Ipoh at Gopeng is Gua Tempurung, one of the longest caves in Peninsular Malaysia. The impressive chambers of the 2-mi-/3-km-long cave can be explored with local guides. Perak (Ipoh is located in this state) is also one of the best places to find the giant rafflesia flower in bloom. Starting at the village of Ulu Geroh, about 7 mi/12 km from Ipoh, nature lovers can take a 90-minute trek into the jungle with an indigenous Orang Asli guide to see the plants (should they be in bloom) and hundreds of Rajah Brooke butterflies.

Adventure tourists should head to the Kampar River at Gopeng where white-water rafting trips are available.

Cameron Highlands
The Cameron Highlands is a group of elevated rolling hills located in Pahang, West Malaysia and can match the size of Singapore. The area was named after its British expedition leader William Cameron in 1885. He discovered that the Highlands had a suitable climate to cultivate tea. This news traveled throughout Britain and soon after, English colonists settled at the Cameron Highlands. By 1930, the Cameron Highlands became the center of tea production and the biggest in Malaysia.



Visitors today can stay at what was once English Colonial houses preserved and modified into hotels and guesthouses, tour the Sungai Palas BOH Tea Estate, hike the scenic tea plantations down to Tanah Rata village, swim beneath Robinson Waterfall and visit the night market.

Kuala Lumpur
Malaysia's capital rises like a vision from the deep jungles. Its fascinating array of architectural styles includes Malay stilt villages, Islamic minarets, Hindu temples, Chinese shop houses and the indescribable opulence of the Royal Palace. In the background rise the world's tallest buildings, the Petronas Twin Towers completed in 1996.

Malacca (Melaka)
Malacca City, also known as Melaka, is situated 95 miles south of Malaysia's capital of Kuala Lumpur, in Malacca state. In the days of the great sailing ships, the port was one of the busiest on the peninsula. Shipping now is confined to coastal trade, because the harbour is inaccessible to ocean-going vessels. A large number of Chinese settled here, followed by masses of European colonizers, including the Portuguese, British and Dutch. Today evidence of all these colonies remain, both in the culture and architecture.
Singapore
One of Asia's great economic successes, Singapore has fused diverse cultures into one dynamic nation.
Behind high-tech industries and high-rise buildings lives a society with an ingrained sense of conservative Confucian values. Beneath the westernized modernity beats a totally Asian heart. Strong beliefs center around extended families, filial piety, discipline, respect and Asian work ethics. Singapore’s name, meaning "Lion City," can be traced to the 13th century, and today there is the mythical Merlion, half-lion, half-fish, standing guard at the mouth of the Singapore River as the symbol of Singapore.
