Itinerary Details

Day 1: Welcome to Ushuaia

You'll be met on arrival and escorted to the Los Cauquenes Hotel & Spa where channel-view rooms have been reserved for our guests.

Day 2: Discover Tierra del Fuego + Embark the Ocean Victory

This morning's guided tour reveals the raw, wild beauty of Tierra del Fuego National Park. Traveling all the way to Lapataia Bay, you'll have a chance to observe indigenous species as you explore the region's forested mountains and waterways. Then board our state-of-the-art ship and settle in to your outside stateroom. Meet your expedition team and get acquainted with our luxury Polar vessel as you set sail along the Beagle Channel. Meals B+D

Day 3: Crossing the Drake Passage

While the Drake Passage is known for its high winds and seas, you'll voyage confidently aboard the Ocean Victory or Ocean Albatros, our next-generation Polar ships purpose-built with stabilizers, powerful engines and a highly-qualified crew. Enhanced by engaging shipboard talks with experts in the wildlife, geology, history and climate of Antarctica, this first day at sea sets the stage for the exciting voyage ahead. Meals B+L+D

Day 4: Cruising Toward Antarctica

Named for the renowned explorer Sir Francis Drake, who sailed these waters in 1578, the Drake Passage also marks the Antarctic Convergence - where cold Polar waters sink beneath warmer currents. This creates an upwelling of nutrients that sustains a remarkable diversity of marine life, and the anticipation builds as Antarctic wildlife comes into view. Indeed, this is the day that we might catch our first sightings of seals and penguins. Conditions permitting, we also hope to make our first landfall on King George, the largest of the South Shetland Islands and home to abundant wildlife including penguins and seabirds. Meals B+L+D

Day 5: South Shetland Islands

Over the next two days, our exciting explorations begin in earnest. A haven for wildlife, the South Shetlands offer a chance to encounter vast penguin rookeries, numerous seabirds and pristine beaches ruled by fur and elephant seals. Our exact itinerary over the coming days will depend on weather and ice conditions. Our exact route and the shore landings we make each day will be determined by the ship's Captain and Expedition Leader - and communicated to you through regularly scheduled shipboard briefings. Meals B+L+D

Day 6: Exploring by Land + Sea

Another thrilling day unfolds as we explore the sub-Antarctic islands of the South Shetland chain. Accompanied by our expert naturalists, you'll set out in our maneuverable Zodiacs to explore the captivating seascapes and to go ashore for unforgettable experiences. Conditions permitting, our planned route and landings include King George Island, home to Gentoo and Chinstrap penguins; Deception Island with its unusual flooded caldera and waters warm enough for a Polar swim; and Half Moon Island with nesting Wilson's storm petrels. Meals B+L+D

Day 7: The Antarctic Peninsula

As the breathtaking white landscapes of the Antarctic Peninsula draw near, the presence of wildlife multiplies exponentially with many species of lively penguins, curious seals, nesting birds and the spray of marine mammals. Our projected route here along the Peninsula will take us through the Gerlache Strait with its towering ice cliffs and pods of magnificent humpback whales. As weather, sea and ice conditions permit, you can continue to anticipate Zodiac excursions to experience Antarctica's wonders up-close and shore landings that promise engaging wildlife encounters with our expert naturalists. Meals B+L+D

Day 8: Another Day of Thrilling Discoveries

Another day of exploration by sea and land unfolds today, with our exact route and excursions determined by our Captain and Expedition Leader. As always, weather, sea and ice conditions are the determining factors and your comfort and safety are always paramount. When not venturing out in our Zodiacs or going ashore with our terrific naturalists, you can enjoy fine dining with wine at dinner and our ongoing enrichment program ranging from exploration history to Polar geology, climate and wildlife. Meals B+L+D

Day 9: Northward across the Drake Passage

Having left the Antarctic Peninsula behind us, today finds the Ocean Victory or Ocean Albatros charting a northward course across the Drake Passage. Our return journey will take us past Cape Horn, a storied maritime landmark that marks the southern tip of the Continent. Meals B+L+D

Day 10: A Final Day at Sea

As the final day of your voyage unfolds, you can delight in the camaraderie of your fellow travelers, attend our engaging shipboard talks, and enjoy our ship's amenities and inviting public spaces. As always, there are two distinctive dining venues onboard the Ocean Victory or Ocean Albatros, and A+R guests enjoy wine with dinner. Meals B+L+D

Day 11: Disembark in Ushuaia

Step off the Ocean Victory or Ocean Albatros and transfer to the airport for your onward journey. Meals B

Featured Destinations
Antarctic Peninsula
The Antarctic Peninsula thrusts out past the Antarctic Circle, lunging vainly towards the Andes, across the infamous Drake Passage. As far as the Antarctic is concerned, the peninsula is the most densely populated location on the continent, sprinkled with vast research bases and minute outposts alike. At the height of the summer season, the human population numbers over 3,000 - not counting tourists. That figure shrinks to less than 1,000 during the intensely chilly winter.
Tierra del Fuego
Surrounded by the Atlantic and Pacific Oceans and the Strait of Magellan, the stunning archipelago of Tierra del Fuego is part of the vast region of Patagonia in Argentina and Chile. The Parque Nacional Tierra del Fuego offers magnificent mountains, hanging glaciers, sphagnum bogs, clear lakes and rushing rivers. Here you may see wildlife ranging from Andean condors to beavers, sea lions and albatross.
Ushuaia
The world's southernmost city, Ushuaia overlooks Beagle Channel, named after the ship that took Charles Darwin to the bottom of the world. Founded just over one hundred years ago, this rustic town is situated amidst incredible snowcapped mountains, dramatic waterfalls, massive glaciers, and a forest known for its red foliage. Tierra del Fuego, the "Land of Fire," twelve miles to the west of Ushuaia, is known for its glacial landscape and its national park, which is a bird-watcher's paradise.

Ushuaia – Tierra del Fuego National Park and End of the World Train - Half Day

Meet your local guide at local pier and start with your visit.
Begin the tour by driving along National Route N3, crossing the valley of the Pipo River and the foothills of Mount Susana, to the train station located in the area where the inmates of the old prison collected firewood.

The little steam train will wind along the trail that the prison train used to follow over bridges, swampy areas, and green valleys, making a short stop at La Macarena waterfall. On completion of the train ride and already in the Tierra del Fuego National Park, drive through the most attractive landscapes of the park, such as Lake Roca and Bahía Lapataia (where the National Route N3, part of the Pan-American Highway ends).

In different locations take short walks to appreciate the different species of the native forest and the protected fauna in the southernmost National Park of Argentina.

After the tour you will be transferred back to the pier.

South Shetland Islands
The South Shetland Islands are a string of islands running parallel to the north west coast of the Antarctic peninsula. The South Shetlands are almost completely ice covered. About 2-3 percent is ice free, usually along the coast, where all life is found whether penguins, seals, or the human inhabitants of the various bases. The islands are frequently visited by tourist cruise ships and each has a different character. From north to south, the main islands are: Elephant Island, King George Island, Penguin Island, Bridgeman Island, Aitcho Islands, Greenwich Island, Half Moon Island, Livingston Island and Deception Island.
Drake Passage
The Drake Passage is the body of water between the southern tip of South America at Cape Horn and Antarctica. It forms part of the Southern Ocean. It is named after 16th century English explorer Sir Francis Drake.
