Ontario & French Canada With Ocean Train To Halifax

Day 1 TORONTO Welcome to Ontario’s capital and the largest city in Canada. Your Tour Director is on hand from 3-6:00pm this afternoon in the lobby to answer any questions.

Toronto is considered the most culturally diverse city in the world with its population representing a wide range of ethnicities and languages. Once checked into your hotel, perhaps do some shopping at nearby Eaton Centre or venture a little further and check out the Hockey Hall of Fame or try some local culinary treats at St. Lawrence Market, a city landmark over two centuries old.

Day 2 TORONTO. EXCURSION TO NIAGARA FALLS Begin the day with city sightseeing including major landmarks such as City Hall, Union Station and the CN Tower. Then skirt the shores of Lake Ontario to Niagara Falls, one of the most loved landmarks in the world. Board your Niagara Falls sightseeing cruise for a thrilling ride to view the thundering falls up close. Then consider joining the optional excursion afterward to the Skylon Tower for more amazing views of the Falls and a buffet lunch before returning to Toronto.

NOTE:
Operation of the Niagara Falls sightseeing cruise is subject to favorable weather and/or river conditions. Favorable conditions usually exist from May to October. When conditions are unfavorable, a visit to Journey Behind the Falls will be substituted.

Day 3 TORONTO–KINGSTON–THOUSAND ISLANDS NATIONAL PARK–OTTAWA Leave Ontario’s capital and stop in Kingston, a city with an exciting history dating back more than 300 years. Proceed along the St. Lawrence River with splendid vistas of Thousand Islands National Park. At Rockport, board your boat for a cruise that takes a scenic route through the many islands that are sprinkled with charmingly simple to opulent summer homes. Next, head to Ottawa, Canada’s beautiful capital.

Day 4 OTTAWA This morning, enjoy a sightseeing tour of this lovely city on the banks of the Ottawa River and the Rideau Canal. See the Royal Canadian Mint, the embassy district, and stately Parliament Hill. Suggestions for this afternoon include a visit to the magnificent Canadian Museum of History or perusing the array of restaurants and shops at lively Byward Market. Or join an optional brewery tour where you’ll go behind the scenes at a variety of local brewers to learn about beer making and also get to sample the products!

Day 5 OTTAWA–QUÉBEC CITY AREA Drive into the French-Canadian province of Québec for a sudden change in language and tradition. Visit Notre Dame du Cap de la Madeleine and its Basilica and learn of its miraculous past. Follow the historic King’s Highway along the north shore of the mighty St. Lawrence River before arriving in Québec City, the heart of French Canada and a UNESCO World Heritage Site. The rest of the day is free. Tonight, join a unique optional excursion to the Érablière le Chemin du Roy Sugar Shack to learn how maple syrup is made and enjoy a traditional Québec dinner.

Day 6 QUÉBEC CITY AREA Enjoy a guided tour of Canada’s only walled city, crowned by the turrets of Chateau Frontenac. Until the British victory of 1759, Old Québec was the center of New France; today, it’s a UNESCO World Heritage Site. Within the walls reside Place d’Armes, Laval Seminary, the star-shaped Citadelle, and ancient Place Royale. Also, see the stone houses crowding the narrow streets of Lower Town by the St. Lawrence River. The afternoon and evening are free. Perhaps join an optional guided tour of the iconic Chateau Frontenac to learn more about the famous people and historical events that have been a part of this majestic landmark hotel. Then tonight, enjoy an optional excursion to Montmorency Falls, cascading 272 feet into the Saint Lawrence River, followed by dinner featuring local cuisine at a charming 18th century restaurant on nearby Orleans Island.

Day 7 QUÉBEC CITY AREA–MONTRÉAL This morning head south for ultra-modern Montréal, named a UNESCO City of Design in 2006. Major attractions on this afternoon’s guided tour include once-walled Old Montréal and majestic views of the city from the top of Mount Royal. This evening is at leisure.

Day 8 MONTRÉAL–VIA RAIL THE OCEAN TRAIN TO HALIFAX Say goodbye to your Tour Director this morning and enjoy a day at leisure. This evening, transfer to the train station and board the overnight Ocean Train to Nova Scotia. Travel along the St. Lawrence River in the comfort of your private sleeper car. (D)

Day 9 VIA RAIL OCEAN TRAIN–HALIFAX Arrive in Halifax and transfer to your hotel. Your Local Host will be available for any questions you may have and can offer suggestions for sightseeing, dining, and shopping. (B,L)

Day 10 HALIFAX. EXCURSION TO PEGGY’S COVE The capital of Nova Scotia is steeped in maritime history. En route to the seaside village of Peggy’s Cove, pass-by the Halifax Public Gardens; see the Citadel National Historic Site, a fort perched high above the city; as well as other notable landmarks. Afterward, journey along the winding coastal highway of the Lighthouse Route to the tiny fishing village of Peggy’s Cove. Colorful houses, fishing shacks and Peggy’s Point Lighthouse, one of the most photographed lighthouses in Canada, are perched along a narrow inlet and on wave-washed boulders facing the Atlantic.

Day 11 HALIFAX Your vacation ends this morning.

Featured Destinations
Montreal
Montréal is truly an experience: old world charm, French joie de vivre and a modern style all its own. Montreal is a stunning city to visit and there is so much to see. Along the St. Lawrence River many people come to take a horse-drawn calèche ride through cobbled streets for romantic moments. Just miles away are the skyscrapers of the city as they tower above the city’s businesses and restaurants. Montreal is the world’s second largest French-speaking City. It's top ten attractions are: The Biosphere, Old Montreal, Biodome de Montreal, Musee d'Art Contemporain, Montreal Botanical Gardens, Chinatown, Notre-Dame Basilica, Insectarium, Cours Mont-Royal, and the Canadian Centre for Architecture.
Quebec City
Because Quebec City is Canada’s most historic city and the only walled city in North America, it was classified by UNESCO as a World Heritage Treasure by. Visitors are greeted by an authentic, profoundly French city. The city features winding, cobbled streets with 17th- and 18th-century stone houses and churches, graceful parks and squares, and many monuments. Great emphasis has been placed on Québec nationalism, and the city has become a symbol of glorious French heritage. Visit the oldest church in Québec, Our Lady of Victory, dating from 1688. See the cellars of Maison des Vins, where Québec Société des Alcools sells more than 1,000 kinds of rare vintage wines in a warehouse dating from 1689. See the exhibits at Civilization Museum. The most striking building is celebrated landmark Château Frontenac. Looming high above St. Lawrence, the turreted building with its slanting, copper roof is an impressive sight. Built to accommodate colonial governors, it is now a hostelry.
Ottawa
Ottawa is beautiful to visit and one of the most culturally diverse cities in Canada. Its magnificent boulevards, exquisite gardens and regal architecture are captivating. The city is home to the country’s national monuments and museums. There is Canadian Museum of Contemporary Photography, National Arts Centre and National Gallery of Canada. Several museums present displays telling Canada’s heritage, such as Royal Canadian Mint, Museum of Nature, Canadian War Museum, Aviation and Currency Museum and Canada Science and Technology Museum. Parliament Hill is heart of Canada’s democratic system. Stay for the Changing of the Guard ceremony or the Sound and Light Show. Enjoy a stroll along Rideau Canal, where lush gardens, impeccably groomed streets and pathways invite exploration. In winter, this waterway becomes the world’s longest ice-skating rink! Ottawa is speckled with attractive streetscapes holding many unique shops, boutiques, galleries and dining areas in their folds, all ready to discover.
Toronto
It’s been called “a city that works.” As the capital of Ontario and Canada’s largest city, Toronto has become a dynamic cosmopolitan hub known for entertainment, culture, sports, high fashion and big business. The city boasts more than 20,000 retail stores and restaurants. Yet for such a large city (current population is 4.4 million) it is miraculously clean, safe and friendly. Tourists are drawn to the charm of the Lake Ontario waterfront district, the high-rise splendor of the popular Yonge Street, and the trendy shops and quaint cafés along College Street and Queen Street. With a flourishing music and performing arts scene, Toronto is very popular with young people.
Halifax (Nova Scotia)
Halifax is Atlantic Canada’s center of business, research and education. Strong emphasis is placed on cultural diversity, historic restorations and the preservation of heritage and culture. The Halifax Citadel Fortress dominates downtown Halifax. Take a stroll along the waterfront past restored buildings and warehouses of Historic Properties, or a walk in delightful Public Gardens, the oldest Victorian gardens in North America. Halifax’s sister city of Dartmouth lies on the opposite shore and is reached via the oldest saltwater ferry in North America. The spectacular view of Halifax harbor makes the trip worthwhile. Housed in former Dominion Building, the Art Gallery of Nova Scotia features Nova Scotia folk art and maritime artists. A two-hour walk will easily show you the major highlights of historic and scenic Halifax. Visit Historic Properties, St. Paul’s Church and Province House, the latter two being the oldest buildings in the city. Granite Springs is rated one of the finest 18-hole golf courses in Atlantic Canada.
