Classic New England

Day 1 BOSTON AREA Welcome to New England! Your Tour Director is on hand late this afternoon to answer any questions.

Day 2 BOSTON–PORTLAND–BAR HARBOR Head north into Maine, famous for its beautiful coastal region, including its legendary lighthouses and lobster industry. Stop in the historic Maritime city of Portland where an included city sightseeing tour upon arrival shows you the cobblestone streets of the famous Old Port waterfront, lined with working fishing wharves and converted warehouses with restaurants and shops. Continue northeast via Bangor, to Bar Harbor, a popular seaside resort and gateway to Acadia National Park. (B)

Day 3 BAR HARBOR. EXCURSION TO ACADIA NATIONAL PARK Bar Harbor is situated on Mount Desert Island, home of the ruggedly beautiful Acadia National Park. Drive through woodlands, past beaver lodges, rocky beaches, and rounded mountains ascending the glacier-scoured granite peak to the summit of Cadillac Mountain, the highest point on the Atlantic Coast and one of the first to see the sunrise. Your afternoon is free to explore the quaint village of Bar Harbor on your own. You may decide to walk the Shore Path, take a nature cruise, or visit the shops, galleries, and boutiques that line the streets. Your Tour Director will have suggestions for additional sightseeing and dining. (CB)

Day 4 BAR HARBOR–FARMINGTON–NORTH CONWAY Explore the roads less travelled of inland Maine, past pristine farmland, blueberry barrens and forests noted for their vivid colors during the autumn. Stop to enjoy the small-town hospitality in Farmington, settled by veterans of the American Revolution. Overnight in North Conway. (CB)

Day 5 NORTH CONWAY–MONTPELIER Today, you are greeted with picture postcard views of New Hampshire’s charming rivers as you drive along Kancamagus Scenic Byway, renowned for its fall leaf viewing. The “Kanc,” as the locals call it, remains unspoiled by homes or service stations for its entire length. A drive through White Mountain National Forest brings you to Franconia Notch. Then visit an eighth-generation sugarhouse and learn about traditional maple sugaring before ending the day in Montpelier, the capital city of Vermont. (B)

Day 6 MONTPELIER–WOODSTOCK–NORTH ADAMS This morning visit Woodstock, its village green reminiscent of 19th-century England. Next, explore Vermont’s rural heritage at Billings Farm & Museum, a living museum and working dairy farm, home to a famous herd of dairy cows. Marvel at the views in Quechee Gorge State Park, Vermont’s little Grand Canyon, and return to simpler times with a visit to the charming Vermont Country Store in Rockingham. End today with an overnight in the town of North Adams. (B)

Day 7 NORTH ADAMS–PLYMOUTH–HYANNIS Drive across Massachusetts today to Plymouth, the first landing place of the Mayflower Pilgrims in 1620, and see Plymouth Rock. Then cross the Cape Cod Canal, the widest sea-level canal in the world, on your way to the town of Hyannis, on the Cape Cod peninsula. Hyannis is known internationally as the “All-American City” and where you will find the John F. Kennedy Hyannis Museum, award-winning restaurants, and quaint storefronts.

Day 8 HYANNIS. DAY EXCURSION TO PROVINCETOWN Today, drive the arm of the Cape, to the old whaling port of Provincetown. This eclectic seaside town is a tiny haven often referred to as “Land’s End.” Stroll MacMillan Pier with its fishing boats and craft shacks, browse the colorful shops of Commercial Street, or dig into a lobster roll, Portuguese pastry, or some fried clams. There’s also time to kick up your wheels on an optional Sand Dune tour in National Seashore Park. Return to Hyannis, where the remainder of your time on the Cape is free for independent activities.

Day 9 HYANNIS–BOSTON Depart this morning for Boston. Upon arrival, your guided tour focuses on the city’s most prominent landmarks. See historic sights of the Freedom Trail; Boston Common; Old State House; Old North Church, where two lanterns were hung on the night of Paul Revere’s famous ride; and Faneuil Hall, with the chance to browse in Quincy Market or dig into a bowl of famous New England Clam Chowder before a stop at Boston Logan International Airport for those with homebound flights. Please schedule flights after 3:30 pm.

Featured Destinations
Brattleboro

The gateway to Vermont for travelers driving north on Interstate 91, Brattleboro is a cultural and artistic community 120 mi/195 km southeast of Burlington. It has lots of ecominded and social-activist residents, plus a food co-op and nice small shops. It has a lovely reservoir, known as the Retreat Meadows, where the West River empties into the Connecticut River (canoes are available for rent). The Estey Organ Museum displays the world's only collection of Estey reed organs from the Victorian era. It is located in one of the six massive buildings where the organs were made for almost 100 years.

Downtown Brattleboro has experienced a revival with the restoration of the town's old movie house and the Latchis Hotel, an art-deco beauty. The chamber of commerce has outlined a walking tour of historic sites downtown. There are a number of interesting shops nearby, including Vermont Artisan Designs and several excellent bookstores. The town has a lively arts scene, which it celebrates the first Friday of every month with Gallery Walk, and the Strolling of the Heifers Parade and Festival in early June has become a major attraction.

More established, but also more weather-dependent, is the annual two-day ski-jumping tournament at Harris Hill Ski Jump. It's usually held in February and reliably draws a contingent of talented Austrians, Slovakians or Ukrainians warming up for the FIS World Championships.

North of Brattleboro is Dummerston, where author Rudyard Kipling lived in the 1890s and wrote Captains Courageous and The Jungle Book. His home is located on 55 acres/25 hectares of meadows and forest and is available for weeklong stays through the British Landmark Trust, which bought and restored the property in 1992.

Just west of Brattleboro is Marlboro, home in June and July to the Marlboro Music Festival, a renowned chamber-music series. Southwest of Marlboro, in Jacksonville, is the North River Winery, housed at a farm that dates to the mid-1800s. Tours and tastings are available.

North Conway

North Conway is nestled along the White Mountain National Forest and the tallest peak on the East Coast, Mt. Washington. Outdoors activities are never-ending, such as skiing, hiking, camping and canoeing. After a day in the rugged outdoors, enjoy shopping and dining at the many local shops and eateries.

Bar Harbor
Drawn by the pines, granite shores, fresh lobster and stunning views from Cadillac Mountain, captains of industry once kept summer homes here. The charming little town, and all the rest, remain. And the rocky boulder beaches on its shoreline are now Acadia National Park, a preserved expanse of vintage Down East scenery.

Burlington, VT
Burlington is a place of many places to see, including the American Museum of Flyfishing, Ben and Jerry's Ice cream, Church Street Marketplace, Lake Champlain Basin Science Center, Lake Champlain Ferries, Montreal Expos, Shelburne Museum, New England's Smithsonian Institution and America's attic on 45 scenic acres with a collection of over 80,000 objects.
Hyannis

Regular fishing and scenic excursions leave from Hyannis, Massachusetts, which serves as a port for ferries from Cape Cod to Martha's Vineyard and Nantucket islands. (You also can catch ferries to the two islands from other towns.) The Old Jail built in the early 1700s is supposedly Cape Cod's most haunted building. Given the region's historical prominence, that's saying a lot. Don't miss the early American graffiti on the jailhouse walls.

Also in Hyannis, stop at the John F. Kennedy Hyannis Museum to browse its collection of photographs from JFK's days on Cape Cod. A video (narrated by Walter Cronkite) focuses on the Camelot era of Kennedy's presidency. You can try to see the famous Kennedy compound from the street (the best view may be from the beach), but the homes are not open to the public, and the Kennedy family carefully guards what it can of its privacy.

Boston
The history and bricklaid beauty of Boston is easy to enjoy. Follow the Freedom Trail past Old North Church, Paul Revere Park, Fanieul Hall, the Commons, Old Ironsides and more landmarks of America's birth. Across the Charles River is Cambridge and Harvard. Venture to Marblehead and Salem to the south, or Lexington and Concord to the north. Back in town, have clam chowder at the warf or great Italian food in North End.
