This morning's Sky Tram adventure offers an exciting and enlightening view of the dense forests that surround Lake Arenal and the volcano. Ascending the mountain, traveling gently through the canopy high above the forest floor, you'll gain a new perspective on this eco-system. These open-air tram cars afford spectacular views of the lake and Arenal Volcano, and immerse you in all the sights and sounds of the forest. At the top of the mountain, you can just enjoy in the panoramic vistas from the wide observation platform or join a guided nature walk along the forest trails of the summit. After this aerial adventure, continue to the Fortuna Waterfall for lunch. Close to the restaurant, an observation platform offers terrific views of the waterfall. After breakfast, you'll join your guide for a guided nature walk into the cloud forests of the Aguti Wildlife Reserve. With moisture-laden trade winds blowing upward along the mountain slopes of the region, you'll find clouds and fog hovering almost continuously in the upper canopy of the forest. Condensing onto the leaves and plants below, the moisture contributes to the extraordinary biodiversity of the Cloud Forest. With expert insight from your guide, you'll learn about the myriad species that thrive here: More than 2,000 varieties of plants (420 of which are orchids!), 400 species of birds including the elusive Resplendent Quetzal, 5,000 different types of moths, 400 mammal species including cats, deer, tapir and sloths, and 1,200 species of reptiles and amphibians! Then visit the Monteverde Orchid Garden to see and learn about these extraordinary blooming plants. In a natural tropical forest with well-maintained paths, you'll discover an impressive collection of more than 460 species of orchids. Many of them are miniature varieties that are indigenous to the Monteverde region, including some with delicate flowers measuring less than one inch! After lunch, enjoy some down time to relax and savor the surroundings of our idyllic hotel. Later this evening, your deep dive into the natural world continues at the Ranario Monteverde Frog Pond, where the sights and sounds of over 30 species gives us intriguing insight into the life and habitat of these often colorful creatures. We enjoy a convivial dinner at a popular dining spot before returning to your hotel. Meals: B+L+D

Day 6: Macaw Sanctuary + Onward to the Pacific

Descending from the cool of the Cloud Forest this morning, you'll visit the Natuwa Macaw Sanctuary where you'll see a variety of endangered bird and mammal species. Established in 1994 to protect Scarlet and Great Green Macaws from threats to their habitats, this pioneering conservation sanctuary has grown into a refuge, breeding and rehabilitation center for numerous animals including primates and big cats. Sit down to a delightful lunch at Villa Caletas, set on a hilltop overlooking the Pacific. Then continue to the Parador Resort and Spa where your spacious Vista Suite offers breathtaking vistas of the surrounding forest and Pacific Ocean. Settle in for a delightful dinner at your hotel. It may be one of the country's smaller national parks, but with pristine tropical forests, spectacular ocean beaches and dramatic rocky headlands, Manuel Antonio is regarded by many as the crown jewel of Costa Rica's extensive system of National Parks and Reserves. In your guide's engaging and knowledgeable company, you'll set out after breakfast to explore along the accessible and well-maintained trails of the Park. Learn about the unique flora and biodiversity of the region and keep your eyes peeled for its wild residents - including sloths, iguanas, the rare squirrel monkey, diminutive red land crabs, and a wide variety of tropical birds. In the afternoon, you'll discover another one of Manuel Antonio's remarkable eco-systems. Setting out in a covered boat, you'll explore the pristine estuaries and lush mangroves that surround Damas Island. Featured Destinations
San Jose (C.R.)
The sophisticated capital of Costa Rica, San Jose, has been endowed with a vibrant street life as well as a refined cultural life. You'll see contemporary structures of glass and steel, as well as colonial, Victorian, and classical architecture, exotic birds, giant butterflies, and picturesque scenery. Costa Rica offers some of the world's most thrilling sights to those who seek a new adventure.

Arenal

Arenal, in Costa Rica, is the site of one of the most active volcanoes in the world.

On almost a daily basis, red-hot rocks crash down its steep slopes and volcanic grumbles produce huge ash columns above the crater.

In addition to the volcano, the area features exciting attractions such as, rafting, hot springs, pristine beaches, and rainforest expeditions.

Monteverde
The Monteverde rainforest area, which comprises ten towns with 8,000 people, is situated on the Continental Divide at an elevation of 5,600 feet. A walk through a Costa Rica Monteverde cloud forest reveals a lush green garden of mosses, ferns, flowers and epiphytes growing thickly on every tree. Clouds drift in and settle among the slopes, giving the continuous moisture required for such exuberant plant growth. Dangling roots and vines sweep across the trails. The air is rich with the sounds of birds and the occasional scurrying of small mammals on the forest floor. In the distance a howler monkey roars.
Manuel Antonio National Park
Manuel Antonio National Park was established in 1972 by Costa Rica to preserve the biodiversity of one of the most beautiful areas in the world. Its stunning beauty and diverse wildlife is unequaled. Walk through rainforests to expansive, sandy beaches - then take a dive to coral reefs under the sea. The forest is home for sloths, iguanas, the rare adorable squirrel monkeys and millions of colorful little crabs. The trail around Punta Catedral affords some spectacular views. The southern facing beach, Playa Manuel Antonio, is a picturesque half mile long, white sand crescent with deep green foliage on one side and a private, secluded cove on the other. Standing with your feet dug into the sand watching waves crash against rocks on either side of the lagoon, it is easy to believe you are a thousand miles from anywhere.
