Trip Overview:
This 22-day South America tour is the ultimate Latin American adventure. Samba the night away in Rio, witness nature’s awesome power at Iguassu Falls, immerse yourself in arty Buenos Aires and Santiago, gawk at the Inca ruins of Peru, then discover lesser known gems in Quito and Bogota.
Few cities in the world are as evocative as Rio de Janeiro. With some of the world’s best beaches separating the lush, green mountains and azure waters, ‘the marvelous city’ is the centerpiece of many Brazil tours. You’ll drive through the downtown, seeing the Sambadrome, the conical Metropolitan Cathedral, and a number of Brazil’s most impressive museums. Your tour ends at Sugar Loaf, where you can take the cable car up to enjoy the view. Then, take the cog train up to see the view Christ the Redeemer enjoys every day atop the Corcovado, before enjoying all nighttime Rio has to offer.
Marking the border of Argentina and Brazil, Iguassu Falls is perhaps the world’s most impressive waterfall system, all surrounded by pristine rainforest. Take a half day on the Brazilian side of the falls to appreciate their full scale, then explore in detail on the Argentinean side. Follow the Green Trail to the Devil’s Throat, and see what wildlife joins you on your journey.
Often called the ‘Paris of the South,’ Buenos Aires is the artistic, political, and social heart of Argentina, packed with sights such as the Casa Rosada, the Colon Theatre, and the colourful La Boca neighbourhood. A half day tour gets you acquainted with the city, ending in Recoleta, perhaps the most elegant part of Buenos Aires, and home to the namesake cemetery, where you can find the final resting place of Eva Peron. In the evening, be seduced by dinner and a tango show.
If Buenos Aires is the Paris of the South, Santiago is its Berlin. Never sleeping, yet relatively unknown to outsiders, Santiago is one of Latin America’s most creative and energetic cities. A half day tour takes you to the main sights, including the Palacio de la Moneda, the Plaza de Armas, the National History Museum, Parque Forestal, and bohemian Bellavista, before the view from Santa Lucia Hill puts your sightseeing in perspective. Perhaps pick up a souvenir from the craft village of Los Granerops del Alba.
Tourists on Peru tours make a beeline to Cusco, but Lima is the face of modern Peru. It also contains the country’s most important museums, including the Larco Museum, one of the world’s best collections of pre-Columbian art. You’ll also visit the Monastery of San Francisco, and the Plaza des Armas, a UNESCO World Heritage Site that is home to a 16th century bronze fountain.
Go on to Cusco, with some time to explore before you head out to the Andean village of Chinchero to learn about the art of basket weaving. Your next stop is Ollantaytambo, the closest thing remaining to a ‘living Inca town,’ which will give you an insight into the empire that once spanned the Andes. Of course, that empire’s most famous legacy is Machu Picchu, which you’ll visit the following day. Make the journey onboard the scenic Vistadome train until you reach Aguas Calientes, the gateway to the famous ruins. You’ll enjoy a guided tour in the afternoon, but there’s a lot to see here, so get an early start on exploring for yourself the following day. You may wish to pre-book a climb up Huayna Picchu for an alternative look of the ruins, walk to the Incan Bridge, or take in the view from the Sun Gate. Then it’s all aboard the Vistadome train again for your return to Cusco.
Ready to fly to the middle of the world? Quito, the city of eternal springtime is waiting! Enjoy a city tour that takes you to many of this under-appreciated city’s historic sites, including those of colonial Quito. Then journey just north of the city to the equator itself. Not only can you stand with one foot in either hemisphere, the gravitational effects of the equatorial line are a sight to behold in themselves.
Your final stop is Bogota, the rapidly awakening capital of Colombia. Having long shaken off its status as a ‘no-go zone’ for travellers, the country now invites them to experience the world’s third largest Spanish-speaking city with confidence and curiosity. Take a city tour to all the main sights, visit what may be the world’s finest gold museum, and end your tour atop Monserrate for spectacular views over the city. This is also a pilgrimage site for Catholics – just one of the many stories you can uncover in Bogota.

Recognizing their cultural importance, he dedicated a substantial portion of his time to recovering and preserving these artifacts scattered throughout Peru's coastal deserts. These treasures were then exhibited in his residence in Miraflores.

Iguassu Falls - Walking Tour of the Brazilian Side of the Falls
Iguassu Falls - Walking Tour of the Brazilian Side of the Falls
A small viewpoint at the foot of the Das Cataratas hotel lawn is where you get your first magical view of the falls. From here, the pathway zigzags down the side of the gorge and trundles along the cliff face, providing views across the narrow gorge at water cascading down in a hundred different places. There are 275 separate waterfalls, with an average drop of 60m (197 ft.). While you walk, you'll see colorful butterflies fluttering about the trail and grumbling coati (a larger relative of the raccoon) begging for food. At the end of the trail an elevator will lift you up to the restaurant by the edge of the falls. Before going up, take the elevated walkway leading out in front of one of the falls. The wind and spray coming off the falls are exhilarating and guaranteed to have you soaked in seconds.
Iguassu Falls - Walking Tour of the Argentine Side of the Falls: Lower & Upper Circuits
Iguassu Falls - Walking Tour of the Argentine Side of the Falls: Lower & Upper Circuits
The Lower Circuit requires more physical effort due to its stairs but it can be perfectly done if you take it nice and slow, catching your breath on the different viewpoints, it goes all the way down the river. The Lower Circuit offers the best views, as magnificent waterfalls come hurtling down before you in walls of silvery spray. The Upper Circuit winds its way along the top of the canyon, allowing you to look down the falls and see the area's rich flora, including cacti, ferns, and orchids. The best time to walk the Upper Circuit is early in the morning or late in the afternoon, and rainbows often appear near sunset. Devil’s Throat is the mother of all waterfalls in Iguazú, visible from observation points from both the Brazilian and Argentine parks. You'll notice that the water is calm as it makes its way down the Iguazú River, then begins to speed up as it approaches the gorge ahead. In front of you, Mother Nature has created a furious avalanche of water and spray that is the highest waterfall in Iguazú and one of the world's greatest natural spectacles. You might want to bring a raincoat -- you will get wet.
