Trip Overview:

This 12-day African safari takes you across Botswana and also to Namibia and Zimbabwe to explore the bountiful natural landscapes of this Southern African region. It includes first-class accommodations, shared tours, and is perfect for return visitors to Africa with a taste for adventure.

Your trip to Botswana begins in Kasane, where you’ll spend a couple nights on the banks of the Chobe River. Staying at a premium safari lodge, you’ll enjoy a sunset game viewing along the Chobe River, where you can spot hippos, crocodiles, and all manner of colourful birds. The next day, you have the option of a game drive through Chobe National Park to see some of the many elephants that live in the park. Head southeast and travel through the Makgadikgadi Pans to Nata Lodge, near the waters of Sua Pan. Experience breathtaking sunset views over the lake and enjoy the fascinating landscape.

Head east to Maun and Moremi Game Reserve, one of the country’s largest wildlife reserves pitched on the northern edge of the Okavango Delta. You’ll spend two days at the premium Mogotiho Safari Lodge and head on morning and afternoon game drives. As you trek through the diverse landscape of flooded pans, plains, and forests, you’ll spot lions and leopards hunting their prey as well as rare animals like rhinos and hippos. Connect back to Maun, where you’ll have the option to enjoy a scenic flight over the Okavango Delta.

Drive across the panhandle and into the heart of the Okavango Delta. At Swamp Stop, you’ll board a boat and journey across the waters of the delta to reach Pepere Island, your home for the next two nights. Staying in fixed Meru-style tents, you’ll explore the surrounding islands and their waterways. Spot crocodiles on the water and colourful birds living on the sandy banks of the islands.

Cross into Namibia and spend a day exploring the landscape of the Caprivi Strip and the region along the Kwando River. After spotting zebras crossing the wet landscape or elephants cooling off in the waters, head back into Botswana and cross into Zimbabwe, reaching Victoria Falls, the final destination on your journey. Victoria Falls is the largest waterfall in the world and one of the most iconic spots on the planet. You’ll have a couple nights at leisure in Victoria Falls to explore the majestic waterfalls and engage in some adventure activities. You can go white-water rafting along the Zambezi River, bungee jump into a deep crevice, or take a helicopter flight over the falls to admire them from high above. If you’re truly daring, brave the Devil’s Pool over the waterfalls, which has only a narrow rock separating you from the depths of the gorge. At the end of your journey, head to the airport to connect back home.

Day 1: Arrive in Victoria Falls

Welcome to Victoria Falls, Zimbabwe - one of the most spectacular sights in Africa! Upon arrival you will be met and transferred to your hotel. The afternoon is spent at leisure to browse the local markets, to experience the many optional activities on offer in the adrenalin capital of Africa including sunset cruises, scenic flights over the Falls and to visit the Falls (own expense). A pre-departure tour briefing will take place at your hotel at 18:00. Dinner is for your own account tonight.

Day 2: Exploring Victoria Falls

Day 3: Victoria Falls to Makgadikgadi Pans

Departing after breakfast, we travel through Botswana to the Nata area. Late afternoon we visit the Makgadikgadi Pans for a truly unforgettable sunset over what remains of an ancient 6500 sq km lake.

Set among indigenous trees and mokolwane palms near Botswana's vast Makgadikgadi Salt Pans, Nata Lodge offers a relaxed base for exploring this distinctive region. Day 4: Makgadikgadi Pans to Moremi Wildlife Reserve

A 4 hour drive takes us to Maun, the gateway to the Okavango delta and Moremi game reserve. We change from our overland vehicle into open 4x4 vehicles and proceed to our accommodation situated at the edge of Moremi game reserve. Moremi is lush and varied, shallow flooded pans, plains and forests. It is one of Africa's finest areas for wildlife, with particularly high game densities including all major naturally occurring herbivore and carnivore species in the region and over 400 species of birds. Days are spent enjoying morning and afternoon game drives in the private concession bordering Moremi.

Day 5: On Safari in the Moremi Wildlife Reserve

Days are spent enjoying morning and afternoon game drives in the private concession bordering Moremi.

Day 6: The Moremi Wildlife Reserve to Maun

Enjoy a morning game drive before travelling back to Maun. The afternoon is free for an optional 1 hr scenic flight over the vast Okavango Delta (own expense).

Thamalakane River Lodge is placed on the banks of the Thamalakane River, just 19kms from Maun, and en route to the famous Moremi Game Reserve. Character en-suite stone chalets, some with private splash pools are positioned in the shade of the riverine forest, overlooking the river. Chalets, public areas and the swimming pool take advantage of the 180 degree view of the riverbanks lined with fluttering reeds visited by an ever changing array of water fowl and birds. Day 7: Maun to the Okavango Delta

Driving round the pan handle we traverse to the northwest of the Okavango Delta. We arrive at Swamp Stop and our lodge on the edge of the Okavango Delta. Game walks are also done on the smaller islands in the area subject to the water levels of the delta.

Day 8: On Safari in the Okavango Delta

Today we travel by boat 30 minutes into the delta. We do mokoro & boat excursions in the back channels of the Nxamasire area of the delta. Game walks are also done on the smaller islands in the area subject to the water levels of the delta.

Day 9: The Okavango Delta to the Caprivi Strip

Departing the Delta we cross into Namibia and continue to the Eastern side of the Caprivi Strip. A 20 minute boat trip takes us to our lodge overlooking the flood plains of the Zambezi River.

Relax on your balcony or lie back on your king-size bed in your spacious cabin and absorb the peace of the river, as mekoro slice through the water, the muted sound of cow bells wafts through the air and the cool breeze dances on the river.

The lodge sings its tributes to the colours of the water, the surrounding riverine vegetation and the clear blue sky, adopting the local Silozi name for colour - 'Mubala'. It tastefully explores this delicious theme in its shades of gentle blues and sea greens that punctuate wicker chairs and tint bungalow walls.

Day 10: The Caprivi Strip to Kasane & the Chobe River

Crossing back into Botswana we overnight on the banks of the Chobe River. Chobe is famous for its beautiful scenery, magnificent sunsets and abundance of wildlife and birdlife. The afternoon of arrival is free for an optional game drive.

The barren landscape of the Makgadikgadi Salt Pans in Botswana attracts adventurous nature lovers. The salt pans, about 310 mi/500 km north of Gaborone, are among the largest in the world, covering 2,500 sq mi/6,500 sq km between Francistown and the Okavango Delta.

Bird-watchers interested in unusual habitats are the best candidates for a trip to Makgadikgadi. Game lovers might see zebra, springbok, gemsbok and other animals (primarily in February and March), but there are much better places in Botswana to watch animals. And, in reality, most of the birds seen there are the same species that can be viewed more conveniently in the Okavango Delta (though the flocks of flamingos and pelicans tend to be larger on the pans).

The main attraction of the Makgadikgadi Salt Pans is the atmosphere: The bleached landscape, the dead-flat terrain, the few bloated baobab trees and the multitude of mirages provide a kind of otherworldly experience. Quad biking (using four-wheel-drive all-terrain vehicles) across the cracked and dried pans is a popular adventure activity, and most guides can arrange it.

Kubu Island is especially eerie, as the vistas of salt flats extend to the horizon. Large baobab trees dot the island, which at the north end looks much like a ship's prow. A circular stone wall and about 70 small stone cairns can be seen at the south end of the island. Some archaeologists believe this enclosure was used as an initiation site by 14th-century Zimbabwe peoples.

If you visit Kubu Island, which can only be reached by four-wheel-drive vehicles, be very careful of the salt. When wet, it is so soft that it can literally swallow a vehicle down to the wheel wells in a few seconds.

Several typical Zimbabwe ruins are situated around the east and southern edges of the salt pan. Consumption of the salt on the pan is not advisable because it can cause diarrhea.

Joining a professional mobile safari is the safest way to explore the pans, and there are plenty of camp sites.
