Epic Scenery, Iconic Landmarks Explore the sobering legacy of modern history on this independent tour based in Munich, with guided visits to Dachau, Berchtesgaden, and key sites.
Trip Overview:
This tour, although in some ways bleak, shows a vivid part of contemporary history. Using Munich as a base with 4 nights’ accommodation (you have choice), you will take tours in and around Munich.
The first morning of touring is to the site of the Dachau concentration camp 16 kilometres/10 miles north west of Munich. This may not be as well known as Auschwitz but it has significant importance as this was not only the first to be opened and also used as a model camp but also where the guards and camp officials were trained. You will visit the memorial site, the museum and see a documentary film.
The following day is devoted to a full day tour to Berchtesgaden, Hitler’s mountain retreat and the former southern headquarters of the Nazi party. You will drive up to the top of Mount Kehlstein at a height of 1835 metres/6150 feet where you will have outstanding panoramic views of the Alpine mountain range. In the winter, there will be an alternative tour to the very interesting underground salt mines.
Your final day will include a walking tour of Munich. It was here that the birth of the Nazi movement had its beginnings. Visit such sites as the Hofbrauhaus where the first Nazi mass meeting took place, the Konigplatz, site of Nazi mass rallies and stop in the Hofgarten to find out about the White Rose resistance movement plus visit other places of significance.
