Matera, in the south of Italy, is world famous because of I Sassi, a stunning and well-preserved village consisting of hundreds of caves that were turned into dwellings, churches, and palaces. The Sassi were designated a UNESCO World Heritage site in 1993. The 18 caves have been restored through a careful and conservative process conducted with the utmost respect for the local cultural heritage. Each cave reveals the original shape and materials. The hotel's interior design, the respectful and minimalistic approach of Sextantio, is reflected in the rustic wood furniture elements. Often the furniture has been built into the structure to maintain a continuity of form and function with the original building. The bathrooms are a fascinating combination of ancient stone and modern plumbing, with free-standing tubs. Some rooms offer terraces. Though there is no spa on site, guests can book massages in their own cave dwelling. The hotel serves complimentary breakfast, and there`s a regional restaurant and a bar in a former church with a terrace.
