Review
July
Pros: First time cruising USA. Superb service, food and itinerary.
Cons: Enrichment program marginal both in timing and content.
Recommended: Yes
Historical presentations for individual stops were given before excursions and walk abouts were completed from the previous day. Some presentations were irrelevant to the particular destination. Some were incomplete - little on the peculiar history, physical characteristics, cultural etc of the area. If I heard about Moby Dick once, I heard it a million times! Obviously presenter was a history buff but focus was fuzzy at best. Presenter proud of military achievements, but her interpretation of her prior military "successes" detracted from the purpose of her presentation. Maybe my experiences as a career military fighter pilot jaundiced my observations.

American Cruise Line
June
Pros: The food and dining room staff were very good (Anthony was great). The itinerary (New England Islands) and Cruise Line organized shore excursions were very good.
Cons: Unfortunately, the ship and amenities were below our expectations. The ship was in need of repair and updating. The cabins were small and there was inadequate space to store luggage after emptying. There was no safe or refrigerator in the room.
Recommended: No
The ship was designed for river cruising, making it very susceptible to a very rough ride. Even with minimal waves, this resulted in the dresser drawers sliding open and slamming shut repeatedly when the ship was underway. It was impossible to walk around when this was happening.

Wonderful Simplicity
December
Pros: All-American crew (no language struggles); quiet, serene atmosphere; older passengers; no embarkation/disembarkation hassles
Cons: Food choices adequate but not extensive.
Recommended: Yes
The "American Star" presents a warm welcome with a serene atmosphere. The ship is small (100 passengers max) thus easy to navigate. There is no glitz - just clean, straightforward comfort - with an outstanding American crew. We will certainly sail with American Cruise Lines again.
