Review of Viking Jupiter

January

Pros: Staff are accommodating and kind. Ship, in rougher water, was quite stable. Food was good.

Cons: The day-time activities did not have a lot of variety. As the trip went forward people seemed to get lax about hand washing without Viking staff around to tell them to wash their hands (mainly in World Cafe and Explorers Lounge).

Recommended: Yes

Great trip! Trip of a lifetime. Port adventures were awesome!

Nice Cruise

December

Pros: Excellent Itinerary, Well-handled medical emergency (captain kept us informed without compromising the guest’s privacy), good crew on all levels, good excursions (both included and purchased)

Cons: Probably time for a refurbishment of the ship

Recommended: Yes

Having sailed on other Viking ocean ships, the Jupiter, by comparison, looks due for a refurbishment. For example, the sheer curtains in our stateroom were coming off track and, in public locations of the ship, furniture and carpets were looking a little worn. These small things didn’t affect the pleasure we took in our cruise but, in comparison to other ships, we did notice a difference. My guess is that Viking has this scheduled in the near future. As for the serious medical emergency mentioned above, this event required us to return to our last port and caused us to miss one of our next port of call. As soon as the need for returning to port was obvious, the captain made a ship wide announcement explaining the severity of the issue as well as his and his crew’s efforts to get us back on schedule. Clearly there was no other alternative as a helicopter rescue was not possible due to location and weather. The next morning he explained we would have to miss a port as well as the efforts the crew had made overnight to deliver the patient to the nearest medical facility and their efforts to catch up to our itinerary. Due to his quick and clear communication, we, as passengers, understood and were thankful for his appropriate decisions.

Cruising South America

November

Pros: Small ship sailing, included excursion in every port, included specialty restaurants

Cons:

Recommended: Yes

It was a perfect 18 day cruise, wonderful ports and excursions. The ship is beautiful, staterooms are roomy with plenty of closet & storage space. The staff is very friendly and efficient. Food was excellent. Enjoyed special seminars held daily in relation to the regions traveled with very knowledgeable scientists.

Viking is the best

November

Pros: Lovely ships, great crews, staterooms and bathrooms sparkling clean

Cons:

Viking makes travel adventures easy. They attend to every need and make us feel welcome. I like to smaller ships where I can get to know some of the crew and they get to know me.

Simply outstanding!

September

Pros: Staff, ship, excursions, food, spa, gym, room service, shows

Cons: Small room, last on the list to book excursions, no binoculars

Recommended: Yes

We saw and learned so much in the two weeks on this beautiful ship. I struggled to think of cons. Other guests were a pleasure to get to know. Even our one rainy day was so much fun. Highly recommend!

Cruising the Med in Style!

August

Pros: Great food and service, excellent tours, perfect weather, first class spa

Cons: Most tour guides did not take into account the mobility-impaired guests.

Recommended: Yes

We had a lovely time, but noticed that mobility-impaired guests were at a distinct disadvantage during tours. As noted above, we had TWO guides during the entire trip who actually paid attention to folks who had a hard time keeping up. Tours specifically designed for those folks would be preferable. Would have loved more time in Monaco, Croatia and Montenegro.

July

Pros: Very well organized, awesome crew at every level, clean, beautiful and elegant ship

Cons: None!

Recommended: Yes

Viking really takes good care of their guests. This is a wonderful cruise for relaxing and having a good time as well. There’s always room to enjoy the amenities since there are only 900 or so passengers, no waiting in long lines anywhere on the ship.

Viking Jupiter

July

Pros: Beautiful ship, great staff, lots of restaurants, good food, good entertainment, nice small ship

Cons:

We enjoyed our time spent on Viking Jupiter. The ship had all the amenities that suited us and we had very smooth sailing the entire trip. There were plenty spaces where you could enjoy reading a book or just people watching.

JHS/JCA review of recent travel experience

September

Pros: The ship was in great shape. The layout and thoughtful design is something to behold.

Cons: Having trouble coming up with anything I did not like. Perhaps the security we had to go through each time we returned from a tour

Recommended: Yes

This is my second experience with Viking and first ocean cruise. Level of passenger care was exceptional. Your staff is so well trained to provide the highest level of customer service. We also extended with Viking in Rome. We experienced professional transfers from out neighborhood hotel to the center of the city. Great staff from Viking at the hotel and also at the airport. This was a very pleasant surprise and much appreciated.

Best Cruise Line Ever

April

Pros: Service, Accommodations, Food, Staff/Crew

Cons: Included post COVID shore excursions seemed less comprehensive than pre COVID

Recommended: Yes

Viking has ruined us for any other cruise line. They are simply top notch in everything they do! Impeccable accommodations and food, courteous, efficient crew, less than 900 passengers on ocean voyages. Honestly, it was a stretch to find a con. Viking is obviously more expensive than many other cruise lines, but definitely worth every penny!

felt like royalty

April

Pros: great staff, every need anticipated

Cons:

Recommended: Yes

We had a great time on this cruise, our first ocean one. Although weather prohibited us from going to one port, it was still a great value. I would go again, the most impressive part of the cruise above the ship, stateroom, food and amenities has to be the staff.

South American trip

January

Pros: Staff was incredibly excellent! Friendly, polite, immediately helpful. Ship extraordinarily clean.

Cons: We needed more detailed excursion information PRIOR to the excursion…during the early booking prior to the trip.

Recommended: Yes

Although I have already filled out numerous forms, I will again add the names of the staff who were wonderful…Samuel our cabin steward, and dining/wait staff…Sandro, Andrew, Jerico, anyone who dealt with us. Most of the excursions were good. We had to outsource through Viatour for the penguin Falkland Islands….Jimmy Curtis Touring was fantastic. Port Madryn Welsh Tea was a very poor excursion. If anyone had told us we would be on a bus for a total of 3 hours for tea and cake, I would not have gone. My highlights were: Jimmy Curtis touring on Falkland Islands, Chilean Rainforest on horseback, the glaciers, rounding the cape, and spending time on the ship with my friends a group of 12. Prior to boarding the ship, our travel agent organized a Buenos Aires tour with a woman named Gilda (sp?)…she was FANTASTIC. And at the end of the tour, we asked to eat lunch somewhere and she took us to a great little restaurant to have empanadas…I can’t remember the name but it was wonderful. The other restaurant was in Santiago in the Marriott building…named KARAI. We were a group of 10, and we all agreed it was THE BEST meal we have ever had in our lives. UNBELIEVABLE!!

Some good, some not

August

Pros: Dining staff and cabin steward were excellent. Nightly entertainment was good.

Cons: Miscommunication between departments and Cruise Director gave out inaccurate information. The excursion department could have been more helpful.

Recommended: No

Mariehamn port was a waste of one day. We really did not have two days in Stockholm as we were led to believe as everyone disembarked on the second day. Most ports were enjoyable even though some local guides were bad. Don’t think this cruise met the reputation of Viking especially for what it cost.

Baltic Sea Adventures

August

Pros: Super organization; friendly, caring staff; class act; great shows and entertainment; wonderful excursion choices

Cons: I would have been happy with more strict safety precaution (as in 2021)

Recommended: Yes

Once again, the crew and staff did a remarkable job. Viking is a master at moving people in such flawless, smooth operations that it seems like an easy process - all of the time. Everything is impressively consistent excellence. This is why Viking is our number one way to vacation.

Worked out OK

June

Pros: Great staff/crew on a lovely, immaculate ship. Conditions/events forced acceptable tweaks to the itinerary.

Cons: Port previews. Showroom entertainment was second-rate.

Recommended: Yes

Cons: Re the previews: They were dull, uninspiring -- never left us with a feeling of "Oh, boy -- can't wait to see (destination) tomorrow." Neither narrator convinced us they'd actually been there and truly loved a port or the experience. That goes for both. . . . And the shows came off as simply obligatory -- like third-rate motel-Branson. Pros: The crew, from cabin stewards to wait staff to wafflemakers to folks we'd meet incidentally could not have been nicer or more competent. Seemed like everyone knew us by name by Day Two, which is, of course, impossible. Fell in love several times. And the ship is, of course, gorgeous -- better than we deserve.

Excellent...Except...

January

Pros: Excellent staff in all areas. Excellent cabins, food choices and Spa Services.

Cons: Additional Cost excursions. Not All inclusive.

Recommended: Yes

Never felt I was on a ship with 900+ passengers. We were spread out nicely! TOURS: With few exceptions (Caser in Buenos Aires & Max in Valparaiso) shore guides were weak; some read from scripts but some really knew their city. The Panoramic Valparaiso & Winery trip ($158 per person= $316) was NOT worth the additional cost when one exit further there was a winery that was. Vinamar was not a winery - they just grew grapes. The guide knew nothing about wine other than that the names of three varietals planted. FOOD: Excellent choices at all venues. Ate at the two "special restaurants" three times but never figured out how some ate there several times. COOKING SCHOOL: Only after mentioning in the mid cruise evaluation that I was never able to book a Cooking School slot, all of a sudden I was offered one. AIR PLUS: I did hear about "Air Plus" on the cruise-a way to upgrade an airplane seat. I do wish Viking had a relationship with American Express!

Amazing Trip on a Exceptional Viking Cruise

August

Pros: Ship and Staff amazing

Cons: NONE

Recommended: Yes

Great trip to the British Isles on the Jupiter. Viking never misses a beat from day 1-day 15. Ports were all unique as were the excursion offerings. Perfect to be able to blend independent exploration to tours totally planned and executed. The food was superb in every restaurant..... and the staff was trained to provide perfect customer service. Go and Enjoy.

Viking Jupiter

July

Pros: It is a great ship! This is the newest one in their fleete of ocean ships.

Cons:

Recommended: Yes

From the moment we embarked, the staff and crew were very friendly and helpful and the ship was very inviting. The ship was very clean and appealing. The food was delicious and there was always plenty of it. The entertainment and talk shows were well planned. There were plenty of shore excursions for each port to chose from and they were well planned and organized. The disembarkation process was very well organized. Overall, the sailing on the Viking Jupiter was a wonderful experience. I highly recommend it.

Into Land of Midnight Sun

July

Pros: Ship is lovely, great cabins and bathrooms, wine/beer included for lunch and dinner, food generally very good with crab and sushi at dinner.

Cons: Included excursions were a bit long with wasted time, entertainment was below our expectations, ship suffered a propeller malfunction that caused a delay skipping two desired ports

Recommended: Yes

Viking did offer some compensation but it was just non-refundable on board credit

Norway with Viking

June

Pros: Nice ship. Lots of space. Staff work hard to please. Great cabin.

Cons: Bigger ship than river boats.

Recommended: Yes

Nice trip Norway is beautiful. We have done several river cruises and found them to be great. The larger ocean ship means you don't really meet people like on the river boats and we missed that. The Viking staff really try to make it work and they do well. We thought the food was varied but not always that tasty.

First Experience with Viking Ocean Cruise

June

Pros: The ship, staff, service, specialty restaurants, itinerary, and excrusions were all excellent

Cons: Musical entertainment and menu selections

While the food was prepared and presented very well, I thought the overall menu lacked creativity and on several days was rather boring. Musical performers were fair, but did not attempt to engage or interact with the audience.

Norway...Into The Midnight Sun

June

Pros: Itinerary was well chosen. Ship was stunning and staff and crew could not have been more helpful. Entertainment onboard...stage shows, opera Aida in the theatre, lectures (naturalis, astronomer, historian and a former aid to Ronald Reagan.

Cons: Not a negative but we were surprised how many times we had to tender to a pier. Always done with ease and organization but for any traveler with mobility issues

Recommended: Yes

We have traveled with Viking twice now (two 14 day trips), river and ocean. The river is more intimate with fewer people. Ocean has more entertainment and places onboard to explore.
