Pleasant Cruise- better for groups

March

Pros: Staff (wonderful), size of ship (perfect), plenty of activities for all ages, onboard shopping, fine dining restaurants

Cons: Casual food / buffet (cold, stake, bland), decor (gaudy in places), lack of options for young solo travelers

Recommended: Yes

Overall it was a relaxing cruise (plenty of pros noted above) and my teens had a blast with all the other teenagers he met (we went during Soring Break), but as single (and effectively solo traveler) I felt like there was no place for me. I attended a single/solo-trVelers meet up (one of two offered) and ended up having Tea with four women in their 70s. It j uh at seems to be something more suited to groups or couples. The food was really not good- looked a lot better than it tasted. Signature restaurant was good though. Drink service was scarce around pools and excursions at ports of call were disappointing and underwo. Still, I through myself into finding quiet time with myself- reading by pool, napping in stateroom, walking laps, and massage. I think Jolland Americas is a very nice line and would try it agat(without excursion) as part of a group. Big thanks to wonderful staff.

Made, Ilham, Aldrin and the Holland America Staff Shine

March

Pros: Smiles, greetings by first name, delightful, personal service of the highest regard.

Cons: None

Recommended: Yes

The ship accommodations were lovely and relaxing. Friendly staff. The walking track that circles the ship was a welcome surprise. The Dutch Grand Cafe drew us in with espresso martinis and traditional Dutch treats. Sunshine, blue sky, warm breezes. On our whale watching excursion we enjoyed 2 hours with a mother humpback whale and her 1 month, 2,000 pound baby.

Exceeded expectations

March

Pros: Staff friendly and helpful, cleanliness, safety, quality of food, organization

Cons: The Navigator app needs attention. The tabs are too small and non-contrasting colors making it difficult to read

Recommended: Yes

Third Holland America cruise, second on this ship. We were more impressed this time then on our first cruise on Nieuw Statendam. The Pinnacle dinner was superb, and the "regular" food options were many and of very fine quality. My wife and I both felt the food was improved from the year before. The options were plentiful and there was not one item we would not get again. The stewards we had were friendly and provided excellent service--the room and bathroom were always clean and fresh. All the staff were helpful, smiled, and greeted you. This was a relaxing and refreshing cruise experience.

Holland America Line

September

Pros:

Cons:

Recommended: Yes

The staff were all excellent and worked hard. That includes the dining room staff, Lido Deck staff, stewards, etc. They were all excellent. The food was good, but needed more of a variety. For example, lobster when in New England, Blueberries served in some way, either ice cream or dessert, when in Maine. The entertainment was not good at all. Only two nights were pretty good with a comedian, and all the other nights not good at all. It was easy to get an appointment for the ship's doctor due to an eye infection. The wait was not bad, and the medical staff friendly and professional.

Wonderful Christmas Cruise

December

Pros: Beautiful ship, friendly and efficient crew, great food and service

Cons: Not enough time at Half Moon Cay

Recommended: Yes

Wonderful Christmas cruise on the Nieuw Statendam. Beautiful holiday decorations around the ship and all of the crew were in the holiday spirit. Great food and service everywhere we went. Most of the passengers were in the 40's - 60's age, just right for us.

Great Caribbean Vacation

February

Pros: The food was excellent in the dining room. The waiters were friendly and efficient. The cabin stewards kept the room clean and responded to our needs. Ports of call were great.

Cons: Holland needs to improve on the entertainment.

Recommended: Yes

I highly recommend the Nieuw Statendam. It is a lovely ship. The Pinnacle Grill’s atmosphere and food were excellent. The dinning room food was exceptional. We didn’t have a bad meal. Our waiter Ramos was super friendly and very accommodating. Our favorite port of call was Amber Cove. We rented a cabana overlooking the pool area and spent the day enjoying the facility.

Sister Act, with plenty of music

February

Pros: Great cruise director, EXC talks on a variety of subjects, twin pianos

Cons: Slightly clumsy dining arrangements, some mediocre meals

Recommended: Yes

After sailing on Koningsdam 2 years ago, we felt at home on the Nieuw Statendam. Slightly different arrangement on the Music Walk, but still one of the highlights. Cruise director Vince has introduced EXC talks on several subjects from the history of rum to off-shore banking. All of these are well researched and presented with humor as well as facts. Half Moon Cay was as good as ever.

Great Ship!

January

Pros: Much improved premium internet package compared to last year; great food selections; great beds;

Cons: Need more berries: raspberries, strawberries, blueberries in Lido deck breakfast and lunch buffet.

Recommended: Yes

Really beautiful ship. Loved the Lincoln Center presentations! Great bedding and comfortable beds. Just needs a dim nightlight in bathroom area. A more interesting itinerary would be great, but we also just love to relax on the ship. Seemed very roomy and uncrowded.

Mediterranean

October

Pros: Good service

Cons: Food excellent choices but some less then quality we have had in the past

Recommended: Yes

Lost 3 ports due to weather which means we received less then the value we expected from the trip. Not HAL fault of course. Excursions were for the most part very good but I did not realize that panoramic means we are not stopping.

Mostly the same. One big improvement and a few disappointments

September

Pros: Shower stalls instead of tub/showers. Lincoln Center venue and quintet terrific.

Cons: Can't by-pass the Casino on Deck 3. Outside deck too narrow for convenient walking, and the view is hampered most of the way around the ship. Too biug,, too many passengers. No library. Lousy main acts in the World Stage theater.

Recommended: Yes

Beautiful Debut

January

Pros: Roomy verandah stateroom with plenty of drawer/closet space. Well lit bathroom with spacious shower and easily adjustable controls.

Cons: Daily newsletter was confusing and sometimes contradicted other parts of the program as to time and venue. Make the template simple.

Recommended: Yes

The crew was not only courteous and friendly, but most accommodating when special requests were made. The dining room was exceptional, so light and airy. We treated ourselves to dinner and both the Pinnacle Grill and Tamarind. Both specialty restaurants were exceptional. The true highlights were the staff in both venues. Loved the entertainment in both the BB King Nightclub and Billboard on Board. We would not hesitate to book another cruise on the Nieuw Statendam and her sister ship, Konigsdam.

Cuisine and service shine on Nieuw Statendam

December

Pros: Great food with good options for vegans; Super-duper employees

Cons: Entertainment, crowded lido deck and an overrun private island

Recommended: No

Barely broken in (I understand this was the third voyage, and I will say those YouTube reviews were not particularly instructive. Holland America's attention to food is a strong point, and I will state with confidence that your vegan/vegetarian clients will be pleased with the options. My college-age son is rather extreme in terms of that diet. A maitre d' provided us with a menu, from which he ordered the next day's dinner the night before. The kid was well-satisfied and pleased with the food (as well he should be, since I paid for it). Particularly excellent is that the waitstaff (fantastic! fantastic! the best I have experienced at sea, though as a reference I've only sailed the fairly standard lines (Carnival, Celebrity, Royal Caribbean, Costa) knew that we had a vegan in our dining group -- and we had the "anytime dining") Also notable is that even when we showed up in the main dining room at peak times, we experienced waits of no longer than four or five minutes even with the anytime dining. Meals were superbly plated -- good to look at as well as tasty; there were just a couple of misses, with chewy beef dishes and a sweet-and-sour shrimp). The desserts were delicious and, in many cases, intricately assembled. Extraordinary. We were less than pleased with the activities and entertainment. The "World Stage" setup with LED screens is a bit limiting, and if you like the old-fashioned productions with singers and dancers, props and a small band, you'll be quite disappointed. The guest performers -- a "mentalist/magician" who blew his big act, and a comedian were bombs, and embarrassingly so; a German juggler came out better, and the house dance ensemble offered two shows with varied music and styles. They were the best dancers I have ever seen on a cruise ship. A downside is that two nights of a seven-day sailing were largely repeats. Holland America seems to be putting its money on the Music Walk venues -- the Rolling Stone Rock Room, Billboard Lounge (dueling pianists), Lincoln Center Stage (pop classical, so-so ensemble of college music major capability) and the best by my reckoning the BB King Blue's Club. The latter ensemble, with two horns, was tight. The Rolling Stone Rock Room offered up a tired fare of "classic rock": "Born to be Wild", Springsteen and Mellencamp. I'd put it on par with a club bar band. I like rock, but things got loud -- LOUD -- at times. I would have enjoyed a steel drum outfit on the lido deck -- which you will not find on Nieuw Statendam. If I had any bone to pick, it would be Holland America's double-booking at Half Moon Cay-- as its two biggest ships, the Koningsdam and Nieuw Statendam were tendered on the same day. Too crowded. The beach was a constant stream of folks, and long lines greeted anyone wanting the subpar (not at all up to the line's standard, even accounting for the fact that it's private island fare) buffet there. Shame. It didn't help that our ship was filled beyond the 2650 or so passengers it lists as typical. However, the staff managed to keep pace. They, and the food, are what make Holland America exemplary.
