Cruise Review: Silversea Silver Whisper – Tokyo to Singapore (April 6–26, 2025) Classic Elegance, Thoughtful Touches, and a Nearly Flawless Experience

April

Pros: Personal, professional and sincere service, impeccably maintained intimate ship, excellent cuisine, extensive itinerary, meaningful enrichment, well executed, included shore excursions.

Cons: Commonly used WiFi functions are not accessible without paying $29 per day, per device, in-room technology is out of date, new movie selections are limited, scheduling of some choice activities/lectures overlap on sea days, main dining room experience would benefit from more frequent menu rotations.

Recommended: No

We just returned from a 20-day voyage aboard Silversea’s Silver Whisper, sailing from Tokyo to Singapore—and I can confidently say it was one of the finest cruise experiences we've had.

While the Silver Whisper is one of the older ships in the Silversea fleet, you’d hardly know it. She has been meticulously maintained and tastefully modernized, offering a classic luxury experience that feels both intimate and elegant.

The Ship:
Small but Impeccably Cared For
Silver Whisper may be over 25 years old, but she exudes timeless charm. Public areas and staterooms feel fresh, clean, and quietly refined. The stateroom butlers and attendants were excellent—always friendly, responsive, and genuinely warm. You truly feel cared for, and yet never crowded.

Dining:
Fewer Venues, But Excellent Cuisine
As a smaller vessel, there are fewer dining venues compared to the newer ships. That said, the food was consistently outstanding, and the service was top-notch. Every meal felt thoughtfully prepared and beautifully presented. A special highlight: a Passover Seder dinner, was organized by the Food & Beverage Manager for 18 guests observing the holiday. It was a beautifully curated, deeply appreciated gesture that reflects Silversea’s attention to detail and inclusivity. Also worth noting were the specialty brunches and lunches, each was creative, festive, and a joy to experience.

Enrichment:
Strong Programming & Surprising Hits
With quite a few sea days on this itinerary, the enrichment programming truly stood out. The guest lecturers were fabulous—insightful, engaging, and perfect for the Silversea audience. To my surprise, the arts and crafts sessions—especially jewelry making—were a huge hit. These classes were more popular than anticipated, and every guest was given personal attention, making the experience both fun and rewarding.

Shore Excursions:
Included & Well-Executed
One complimentary shore excursion was offered in each port, and most were very well organized. We appreciated the range of cultural and scenic experiences offered throughout Japan, Taiwan, Korea, the Philippines, Malaysia, and Singapore.

A special shout-out to the post-cruise “Memories of Singapore” tour, which included a full day of sightseeing and an airport transfer. This was a convenient and brilliant way to explore a dynamic city without the stress of managing logistics. It wrapped up the journey perfectly.

Service:
Personal, Professional, and Sincere Silversea’s crew shines in every way.
Officers and staff made a point of personally greeting guests, creating a warm and inclusive onboard atmosphere. You’re not just a stateroom number—you’re a guest in the truest sense of the word. And, it all starts from the top: Captain Michele Macarone Palmieri was the most personable, accessible Captain that most guests, myself included, ever had the pleasure to meet. The bridge tour that he conducted, exclusively for our Signature Travel Network guests was truly exceptional.

A Few Suggestions for Improvement:
Even the best experiences have room for refinement. Here are a few areas where Silversea could elevate the experience even further:

• Internet Limitations:
While basic Wi-Fi is included for every guest, you’ll need to pay $29/day per device to access everyday features like Wi-Fi calling. At this luxury level, this feels outdated. Fully functional internet should be included; perhaps only streaming should be extra.

• In-Room Technology:
The TVs were outdated, both in picture quality and interface. They aren’t angled for bed viewing, and the movie selection is limited—many options were decades old. An upgrade here would align better with the otherwise luxurious experience.

• Activity Scheduling on Sea Days:
Popular activities (like enrichment lectures and crafts) often overlapped, forcing guests to choose between two great options. Staggered scheduling would make it easier to enjoy both.

• Main Dining Room Menu Rotation:
On a longer voyage with limited dining venues, a more frequently rotating menu would keep things fresh and exciting.

For travelers who value classic style, personalized service, and a relaxed luxury environment, Silver Whisper delivers a near-flawless experience. Highly recommended.

11 day trip aboard Whisper

February

Pros: Despite full load, dining reservations were quite flexible, staff tried to please, hotel manager Miranda very good, F& B Matteo also helpful. Shore excursions well managed.

Cons: This is an old ship. Lots of noise in 4th floor with wave action. Distinct sewer scent at various times and places. Missed a port due to waves.

Recommended: No

My 40th cruise on Silversea and the Whisper has not been this good for a long time. Crew also excellent. Renovation of ship in past year mixed success. No more shops, just some open plan displays on Deck 5 lounge. Woodwork in rooms and verandas nit in the best shape. No more auto fresh fruit-on request. No more hot breakfast after 10 thru room service. However, food which is never a wow and rarely hot was consistently better and almost always delivered hot.

Silversea is "uping" their game and it shows

July

Pros: Smaller ship. I think this is the perfect size for Silversea and so did many guests.

Cons: Plastic plants on the pool deck. Silversea is better than plastic.

Recommended: No

I've sailed with Silversea both as a host as well as a paying passenger. Frankly I've been concerned with how things have changed over the past year until this cruise on the Whisper. Little improvements I noticed with a lot more consistency.
More smiles, eye contact and greeting by name from staff and crew.  Helping passengers with their plates in the buffet.
Holding the chair when sitting down.
Serving bread instead of just leaving the basket on the table.
Food has noticeably improved in all dining venues. Better quality meats.  More choices on the menus. Hot meals were hot and cold meals were cold.  Special requests were easily fulfilled according to some guests (in the past there was hesitation). I gave a 4* for dining because there's still room for improvement but was much better than Dawn (2024) or Vista (2024)
Pool area was kept neat and tidy.  Public bathrooms were extremely clean throughout the ship.
Cabins - of course these are some of the largest at sea.  Very comfortable.  The butlers do a wonderful job being attentive and seemed disappointed if you didn't have something for them to do.
Because this was port intense, onboard activities were not well attended as much as an itinerary with a lot of sea days

Cruise to New Zealand and Australia

January

Pros: service was excellent

Cons: Too much time on the water. Not much to do on boat due to cool weather, and rough water

Recommended: No

Wish land excursion would have been longer. Everything seemed rushed. Said you could eat, shop, and tour different things. In reality you only had 1 hour and could only do one thing. We would get back to the boat which didn’t leave for 4-6 hours. Disappointing

14 days on Silver Whisper from Tokyo to Anchorage

May

Pros: Beautiful ship once it is refurbished, large stateroom, food was tasty but could have been a little more healthy (less butter and cream), friendly crew

Cons: The ship needs to be refurbished. Tour options were lacking. It was repositioning and there was a lot of staff training so not all aspects ran smoothly

Recommended: No

I would recommend Silversea as a wonderful cruise line. My review should not be based on the fact that this was a repositioning cruise and is scheduled to go into dry dock later this year. There was a port originally on the itinerary, which would have enabled 2 days at sea, port visit and 2 more days at sea. The port is Russian so it was deleted, which made for a long 5 days at sea. Since the Whisper is small and the weather was cold, the outside facilities were not utilized (Outdoor restaurant, pool, jacuzzi, etc.). There were activities inside (lectures, trivia, bingo, etc) but it was the same everyday and it appeared that guests were getting bored. The entertainment schedule was changed a few times and the communication was not always perfect. Many guests were on waitlist for tours and never cleared, even though the tours were included. I would have loved to see more culturally immersion tours-seems to be the way travel is heading. I feel the cruise was nice but not anything special (based on tours, entertainment, crew training).

Reykjavik to Manhattan

September

Pros: The staff is professional, courteous and friendly. The ship is first class.

Cons: The dining options are limited, only 3 options, which is important on a longer cruise.

Recommended: Yes

Its a beautiful ship, as are all Silversea ships. But as noted above, this was a 16 day cruise and more dining choices and public areas would been nice. Silver Whisper is one of their smaller ships.

silversea cruise Iceland to London

July

Pros: staff members and servers were attentive and thoughtful

Cons: condition of the ship was

Recommended: No

the Whisper is currently not up to the fine standard of Silversea. Stained carpets in hallways, table on balcony worn and scuffed, scuffed paint in various places on the ship it would have been nice to have the cruise director or similar person give live talks each day about the excursions for the next day. they are available on the TV but in person experts would be better. the cooking class of how to make casa dias was amazingly silly - everyone knows how to make these already. something challenging would have been nice. if there are formal evenings during the cruise it would be good to have been made aware in the cruise information given.

Pros: It's like a family you love to be part of.

Cons: Price point too high for most .

Recommended: No

The World Cruise isn’t just about the Destinations. When you’re onboard, you can expect to be continuously spoiled and entertained. The world is expanded and explained by enrichment expert lecturers and time for the varied activities programs, The food is exceptional and nothing rivals the stellar personal service of the crew - from.the laundry worker to the waiters to butler to the officers.

Fall Colors on the Whisper

October

Pros: Service Outstanding. Personnel very Professional. Food well above average. Lectures outstanding.

Cons: Certain brands of alcohol were in short supply. There was no attempt to rectify even when in port.

Recommended: No

I really enjoyed this cruise although I was ill prepared for the unusually early cold spell. For the first several days, the temperatures were below freezing which limited the outdoor activities. The warmth was there in the ship. Great lectures (Female Astronaut Kathy Sullivan), professional crew, friendly atmosphere and plenty of opportunities to meet and greet. I give this experience a very good report because of the staff.

Silver Whisper - September 3, 2019

September

Pros: Ship was refurbished recently and looks wonderful.

Cons: Requesting smaller bathrobes for ladies.

Recommended: No

The reception staff worked so hard trying to locate luggage for myself and also 4 other staterooms that were missing their luggage as well.   They contacted the agents in the ports of call and the agents were the ones to pick up my luggage and deliver both pieces to the ship.  I had an opportunity to meet with the Future Cruise Consultant and he was extremely knowledgeable regarding upcoming cruises.   Silversea cruises offered candy in your stateroom upon arrival which is something new.  They also delivered sweets to your stateroom during the cruise.
Having lost my luggage, the Whisper gave me essential sundry items I needed until my luggage was found.  5 Stars for Silversea Cruises.

2017 World Cruise

April

Pros: Outstanding loyal crew, exceptional service, intimacy you cannot achieve on many larger vessels, plenty of creature comforts in even the lead in Vista suites on Deck 4 . Generous size as Veranda suites (287 sq ft) just no balcony- walk in closets, butlers for every suite level, Veranda Suites are 345 sq feet with the veranda, My favorite suite is Silver Suite which are 701 sq feet, the wideness makes it like a little condo with separate bedroom, dining table bar, 2 TV areas. Shuttle buses are included free in most of the ports. This ship is dated, but it has got the right formula for intimate comfort. Love the open seating in Dining room, and the other restauants are easy to secure a reservation, not like other ships, where couples are begging the maitre d for a reservation as a $50 is slipped in the pocket. Not necessary here you are usually accommodated. The enrichment speakers are excellent, a statesman, a music director and jazz great John Altman, former BA Concorde Captain Rick, Roger MCGuinn of The Byrds-Turn turn turn. Legendary brilliant Cruise Director Fernando, Tracy Apple Ipad classes, The Voices of Silversea entertainment, with an operatic focus yet versatile, may be the best group of young talent on any ship. The list goes on.

Cons: Ship needs some TLC in drydock, pool decking issuws, pool furniture, some modern updates needed, Fitness class area too small for comfortable classes, needs some new plumbing and water tanks.

Recommended: No

This is one of the few ships offering a Full World Cruise with plenty of formal evenings,  live music, elegance and offers dancing with a dance instructor who are part of the Gentlemen and Lady host program. This feature is very appealing to solos, singles, widows and widowers.  On this ship one never feel alone even if one chooses to dine alone.  Despite the ship needing some significant refurbishment, Whisper may likely offer the best overall atmosphere for solo travelers desiring some luxury touches, at the current time. The single supplement was lower than what the competing lines were charging on the 2017 FWC.   Deck 4 Vista suites were dominated by Solo passengers.
Very easy was embarkation in San Francisco at the cruise terminal. And because of the size of the ship and the outstanding crew, rarely will you find a queue. We left port from San Francisco off to 5 days at sea before reaching Hilo, Hawaii.  Days at Sea  were a perfect opportunity to settle in, sample the various activities and shows, and well just  get to know each other. The ship visited Hilo, Maui, Honolulu then sailed 5 days at sea to reach Samoa, we crossed the international dateline and lost a day. Then on to Tonga, 2 days at sea, to Auckland, NZ. From there we sailed New Zealand then Australia from Newcastle, Sydney Melbourne, Adelaide, Fremantle, Geralton, Exmouth ( beautiful town tournament fishing but with more flies than people) The main ports thereafter were in Bali, Palawan(spectacular beaches) Manila, Taiwan,  Japan ( we crossed International Dateline again)  Shanghai, Hong Kong, Viet Nam, Thailand, Indonesia, Malaysia, Sri Lanka, India, Doha, Dubai, Oman, Egypt, Jordan, Greece, Italy, Malta ending in Monaco.

Pros: Beautiful suites and well laid out. Even the minimum suites were very comfortable.

Silversea Caribbean Holiday

November

Pros: Small ship, great food options, wonderful international staff.

Cons: We had to eventually come home.

Recommended: Yes

It's like coming home when we take a new voyage. The staff greets you by name after the first day. The restaurant menus change daily with many updated options. The ship is small, with very experienced world travelers as passengers. If you want a mega ship with rock climbing walls, etc. Silversea is not a good choice. But, if you want refined luxury with a relaxed atmosphere Silversea is the answer.

Baltic Cruise, June-July 2015

June

Pros: Very nice ship with two large dining venues and two lounges. Staterooms are roomy and bathroom is large. Service is terrific.

Cons: Food doesn't live up to billing and Relais and Chateaux connection. It's good, but not great. Menus are limited. Wine service is generous with lots of choices and non-stop pours. Cabin carpeting and fabrics are looking a bit tired.

Recommended: Yes

We sailed with a group of friends, enjoyed the cruise very much and would sail with Silversea again. The staff is extremely friendly and helpful. It is somewhat misleading to say that Stockholm and Copenhagen are part of the cruise. They are starting and ending points, and to see them, you have to book extra time on your own or through the ship. Wi fi service was $30 per day and spotty at that. It will supposedly be offered at no charge beginning in 2016.

Silversea "Silver Whisper" Really Shines

January

Pros: Service By All Staff, Gratuities And Beverages Included

Cons: Entertainment On Board A Bit Limited & Weak

Recommended: No

From the moment one steps on board, the entire staff-front desk, cabin attendants, waiters, bar servers and everyone you pass in the halls are eager to please. You are always met with a friendly smile, greeting with genuine desire to help in every way. The cabins are spacious, immaculate and nicely appointed. Dining options are plentiful, from casual poolside salads to gourmet service in The Restaurant and La Terraza. LeChampagne (additional $40 per person fee), serves an outstanding 6 course feast, with wine pairings to perfectly match each course. The public areas throughout the ship offer many comfortable choices-to suit every mood and need. The bar service with all/endless included beverages is complete to please all tastes and desires. Butler service in all cabins is a great luxury and added value.

Fjord trip to Norway

June

Pros: Service, itinerary, shore excursions.

Cons: Cuisine and "tired" furnishings in the suite.

Recommended: Yes

Silversea Cruises always does a top notch job. The Fjords cruise is a beautiful trip. Staff are well-trained and provide excellent service. The entertainment is what would be expected for a small ship. We were disappointed with the cuisine, which wasn't what we remembered from our last trip. The interior of our stateroom was tired with scratched woodwork and worn upholstery. The cleanliness was excellent. We took part in 3 shore excursion hikes which were incredible. The hikes were quite challenging which we appreciated. They were rated strenuous by the ship which was accurate. We also appreciated that the number of guests on the excursions was small.
