This elegant Dutch Renaissance structure straddles three small islands and has all the trappings of a fairytale castle, but it was gainfully employed as royal residence and setting for important ceremonial events from the 1600s to the 1850s. It now serves as the National Museum of History and is best known for its outstanding collection of portraits, the largest of its kind in Denmark.
